Nothing wrong with cerebro's advice. If you are about to spend a significant amount of time practicing you may as well try and improve your technique.

However,

What you are experiencing is 100% normal for 'returning' players. You need to build up your finesse and your squeeze strength. A rough rule of thumb that seems to hold true is for every day you don't play you go back two. You probably do need to ease back in gently and it may be worthwhile working on your squeeze strength via another exercise. The ball squeeze seems popular
