It definitely sounds like a crapped-out power tube to me. Some 'radio shops' (not Radio Shack) actually still have tube testers sitting around; you can take all your tubes in and identify the gimp one.
Or just retube.

Hobbyist electronics shops on the bad side of town are usually good for finding older equipment like tube testers and such. When I visited my folks last month I discovered a great electronics shop that had a lot of vintage electronics.
