I haven't heard the songs you are referring to, but I've always been a fan of controlled feedback. I actually just bought myself the BOSS DF-2 Distortion Feebacker. (I can't wait till it arrives!)
Another newer alternative is the Line 6 Dr. Distorto. They're a bit different though. (If you are interested I started a thread on this subject about a month back)
What Dags says about the broken pedal is interesting... Adam Franklin of Swervedriver apparently used a broken DF-2 to get the band's characteristic controlled oscillating feedback sounds.
Apart form those two pedals, I searched and searched and there seemed to be nothing else that seemed adequate for my needs.
The looper types seem (by description anyway) as too crazy for my taste. I like something a little more controlled.. I'll get the crazy stuff the okld fashioned way (guitar in front of the amp).
