the one thing that a few people here have mentioned already which will make the biggest difference, in my opinion, is to turn down your preamp gain.

it sounds good at lower volumes but farts out when turned up? well then, as you turn the amp up, back off the gain and the low end. the louder you get the less of both you'll need.
