Thats part of the reason why they are successful. You don't have to rip to have success in mainstream music. People's minds aren't that complex, they want to listen to simple stuff that sounds catchy, and it is all about the vocals, not the guitar playing. They're simple guitar chords give the 2 vocalists much room to do what they want and make the vocals catchy, hence success
