the biggest reason you'll find for why this happens is that mesa tends to bias their power tubes very cold, on the order of about 5mA per tube, when they should really be running at 30mA or so for the voltage they run. I believe peavey runs their power tubes much closer to the 30mA figure... not sure of the exact value, but I know they do run warmer. more bias current means warmer tone
interesting. i guess this is why people are always clamouring to get their amps biased.
to the topic creator, define low levels. also, where is your master and output knobs at?
