DD-6: possible defect?

This Christmas I got myself a Boss DD-6, secondhand, and while it is as amazing as I figured it'd be, there's something a little peculiar about it: if I'm in any delay mode except Reverse, if I play and tweak the Delay Time knob at the same time, I get this weird, squelchy, sped-up, pitch-shifted version of whatever I just played, sometimes repeating up to a minute even if I bypass the pedal or set the Feedback to zero. I admittedly know next to nothing about this pedal, so this might easily be an intentional feature of the pedal, or maybe some sort of "yeah, all the DD-6s are screwed up like that, isn't it great?" type of thing. Either way, can anyone explain the glitchy sounds, or at least reassure me that it's normal?

Thanks,
-- Mason.

P.S. Even if this is a defect, I'm keeping the damn pedal, that's the coolest sound ever.
