It may be stupid, but its true. Supersizing your amp, like you supersize your fries, is no good for you. Its also bad for your audience's ears. You have to be really good to play that loud and have an audience. My 50 watt tube amp never goes past 3.5/10 on stage! It would be too loud.. I should mention it has a good speaker in it though.

Me thinks some people don't read before they post.

You do understand that extra watts do not necessarily equate to more volume right? The difference between 30 watts and 50 watts is unnoticable in volume to the human ear. However more watts can give you more headroom before the amp starts to break up.

Anyways the original poster is still talking about the AC-30 head so how in the heck does what you're saying even apply? We're talking about a difference in tone between a closed-back cab and an open-back combo.

3.5 is almost full volume. Most tube amps are as loud as they are gonna go at 5. Just an FYI

As far as volume is concerned, that really isn't a problem is it? Being thirty watts, I can get good sounds out of a 4x12 closed back cab at a bedroom level, or crank it while gigging. There is a tone difference between open back and closed, definitely. Its all about a tone preference. Personally, I like having the two extra speakers pushing the sound around a little more, and it isn't loud enough to come off as a blatant attack when playing live.

I got my AC-20CCH, the best $850 dollar trophy that money can buy until I buy my freakin cab...

how about an ac-30 head with a 2x12 and then load it with weber alnicos so that your tubes won't suffer from vibration as bad as they would in the combo version. that's what i did. saved a ton of money over the celestion blues and got a superior (IMO, of course) tone. just a suggestion.
