Ashamed to ask this but ...

Please excuse me but I've only been playing some 40 years :-) My question is: If you are using say 2 x 100 watt rigs (stereo out from mixer / pedal or whatever), what is your total output - presuming they are at the same volume level? Is it "double", or less?

I've used two amps in the past for "spread" or foldback, but always wondered what it is I'm pushing out.

Regards,

Big Dave

Electrical power is actually a really power way to grasp acoustical power. There's not really a 1:1 correlation, especially when you're talking about how loud you are in a complex setup with >1 amps.

The best way to understand how much louder your second amp is making you is to grab a SPL meter (they have apps for the iPhone and Android that do this...though their mics have an upper limit that amps can exceed for measuring SPL) and take a measurement.

You may find that, at certain spots, with two amps you're actually *quieter* than with 1 because of phase cancellation. This isn't a bad thing and it's part of what helps give the two-amp setup the huge and awesome spread people love with it.
