clnh5,
IMO, the best all around amps are the ones with the most flexibility. These amps may not give you 100% of what you want in some cases, but do most everything well. 1) Mesa Mark IV: Can do high gain better than many "high gain" amps. All around, perhaps the best, most versitile amp still being made. 2) VHT CL50 w/ graphic EQ. Doesn't do cleans as well as some, but is quite flexible, and does killer gain sounds, with a great low end. 3) Rivera Fandango. Has very good cleans (as all Rivera's tend to), but does a very good gain sound with tight low end and lots of switches and such to shape your sound. Other than some cork-sniffing boutique amps, Rivera's are maybe the best made, highest quality, most durable amps out there. 4)Carvin X-100 (or60). A used amp that's one of the best kept secrets in ampdom. It's as flexible as a Mesa Mark, but lower gain. (6L6 versions are better for headroom/cleans, and the EL34 version has a bit more gain.) If you can find one that's in good shape, quite reliable and sound great. That's my short list FWIW, your milage may vary. Rick. |

I agree with Guruyan...
1.Vox AC30 2.Orange AD30 But that's really just my preference as these amps wouldn't work well at all for certain styles of music like metal or something...

For my style of music I prefer a dynamic, responive tube amp that does nice cleans and will get dirty when pushed. So, usually something along the lines of a Fender or Vox

The best all-around rock amp is by far the VOX AC30TBX. If you can't afford a Vox, OR the Orange AD30 (cause that is as good or better), get a Fender tube amp and an Ibanez Tubescreamer.
For hard rock, I'd say a Mesa Dual Rectifier (only the older models though), or a Peavey 5150.

The amp that I've had the most fun playing, probably ever and really enjoyed was:
20 Watt Marshall JMP head (1917 Model) built point to point, year date 1971. The damn thing fit under a chair, had two tone knobs and two volume knobs, speaker connection, two inputs, and THAT'S IT!!! The thing cooked though and I don't think I've ever had so much fun on an amp.

Marshalls aren't given respect in regards to their versatility - most people associate them with rock/metal, and that's it.
Vintage Marshalls are very versatile amps....great articulation. Great gain. Awesome amps.
