Combos

I've been mentally planning on buy a new amp, I've read about how decent combo amps will do what they need for small gigs and what not. Does anyone have any suggestions or pointers for a combo amp? I don't want to spend over $600 US.
Thanks.

amp distortion? or pedal distortion? do you use a lot of pedals?

maybe a marshall combo? those are pretty decent too.

I, as of now, use amp distortion,
I recently bought a line6 pedal on ebay but I plan on building my collection.

Would using a distortion pedal on an amp without overdrive sound better, or worse?

some people (like me) like to use a clean sound and then build distortion or whatever on top of that.

other people, like to turn up the gain/overdrive a bit on their amp... and use an overdrive or distortion pedal to push it into what some have referred to as "distortion heaven." hehe.

but seriously... either way works fine. try it out and see what you like.

I'm not really into heavy distortion, I guess it realy depends on the kind of distortion pedal you have too. The only problem for me, would be I would have to buy a distortion pedal and the amp. Thanks for the comments man

a lot of times a subtle amp distortion will be just fine.

you could technically pick up a nice, smooth overdrive pedal (vox valve tone, the jekyll side of the visual sound jekyll & hyde, Boss overdrives or a Boss Bluesdriver, Ibanez TS-9's) and you can have a nice smooth sort of distortion.

yah, but the drawback of being on a budget is that the pedals will cost ya some bucks.

I listened to the traynor ycv 40 on musiciansfriend.com's sample clip, the distortion sounds very nice, so if I get the money for that amp, I'd be set.

You all mention the Traynor YCV40 sooo much! I am starting to wonder what this baby sounds like...

Is there a site with sound clips?
I shop at Guitar Center, and if I'm desperate, Sam Ash. Neither of these stores carry the Traynor amps you described, so I wonder, where did you acquire them?
