Different cab = new life for an amp

Just wanted to share my little experiment with you guys.

Lately I've been bummed out with the sound of my amp. It does crushing distortion really well, but was lacking cleans. I had rented a Deluxe Reverb to try out the headroom at practice, and it sounded cool. Not enough clean headroom, but it was nice anyway... I was ready to think about selling my amp and going the Fender direction!

... and then I tried my amp through my friend's Avatar 412 with V30s.

Holy hell, night and day difference. My Marshall B cab is killing my tone! Its got rattles, low end flubs and (much to my surprise) a whole lot of cone breakup. I could not believe how using his Avatar cab gave my amp at least 3 more notches of clean headroom on my preamp. It handled bass without a single rattle making my clean channel sound chimey and powerful. I am blown away!

So, the moral is 'SPEAKERS MATTER IN A BIG WAY', which can be easy to forget sometimes, hahaha.

I'm getting me a new cab

Speakers generally do more than poweramps and sometimes even preamps. My old Standel (1966) has two JBL 12" speakers in it, and it, with just a simple volume/treble/bass circuit, with a solid state preamp and power amp, sounds better than most cheap tube combos.

This is why I'm thinking about getting new speakers for my amps in the future, though it might not be worth putting any money into the Princeton 65...

I could not agree with you more. I have 2 1960b cabs. They were awesome cabs before I knew any better. V30s, EVs, and the high watt Eminence speakers are the way to go if you're trying to get rid of that tone breakup.

Yeah the V30s in the other cab I tried sounded amazing. A little hot on the treble, but easy to dial it out on the amp EQ. I think Soldano uses (or used) Eminence Legends in their cabs, so I imagine they're a similar sound.

[edit]: I stand corrected - my friend has 2 Hellatone 30s and 2 Hellatone 60s in an X pattern. Sobasically V30s and G12H30s.

Cabs are a lot more important than a lot of people give them credit for. I love my V30 loaded Avatar. It's been with me through three rigs and has helped them all sound great. I may do something insane soon-ish and experiment with replacing it with a full range cab, though.

I couldn't be happier with my avatar cab. I plan on getting another one but a 4x12 with Greenbacks and building an old british type head with EL34's. Probably a JTM45 or early 800 in a JMP head cab. Need to make room first of course.
