Fender Hot Rod DeVille
Hey everyone. Just wondering what kind of thoughts other gearheads around here have about this piece from Fender. I'm planning on making it my first all-tube amp and hoping it will become a little workhorse for me (doing recording, gigs, etc..). I play rock (alt and otherwise), blues, and my own shoegazey type stuff.
My basic chain runs like this: Custom Warmoth Jaguar --> Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde --> AnalogMan Clone Chorus --> DOD FX40B EQ --> amp The Jag is fitted with two DiMarzio pickups and has a coil tap on the neck 'bucker so I can use it in either mode (single or humbucker). Anyway, those who have owned or played one more than a bit... any thoughts? |

I have a deville 410, great amp, but it was a floor model so the tubes were already shot when i got it. I replaced them with ehx 6l6 and ehx 12ax7's and it sounds great, not for like high gain though. more of a marshally bluesier crunch, like an overdriven marshall or hiwatt one the crunch channel, cleans are crystal, but the shared eq is a bummer. i'm getting a fender bassman with master volume and using it as a cab from now on, but still a damn good amp. definately worth it.

the HRD will definitely serve you well for those purposes

I don't like my HRD. It's very cheap and harsh sounding.
Go for an Ampeg or Traynor instead, or a Laney even.

The Deville 4x10 & 2x12 are both great amps. They're bashed a lot but half the bands I see come through town use them regularly. I owned a HR Deluxe, and then a 4x10 HR Deville. I didn't like the Deluxe, but I still regret selling my Deville. The tone is amazing clean, Fendery, but distinctive in it's own right... maybe a little bit more modern and dark than a Blackface Fender, and I thought the drive channel in moderation was fine for leads. The Reverb is great, too bad it's not footswitchable. My only problem with these amps are the cheap plastic input jacks with metal nuts. Marshall uses plastic jacks, but the plastic nuts do not strip the plastic jacks like Fender's metal ones do. It's a bad design (overstock parts from when they bought Sunn amps if I remember right), but this really won't effect you unless your careless with them. My problem occurred when a drum stand fell on my cable plug that was plugged into the jack and stripped the nut right off. Honestly, they're a pain to replace, but you can do it yourself if you are careful. I don't want to scare you, I wouldn't let that little design flaw scare you, I would just buy the amp and enjoy it, while treating the jacks with a small amount of care!

i think that the fender hot rod deville is an amazing amp, nothing too bad about it really. sounds and works great for recording, practices, and shows.

i have to get rid of a lot on mine. gonna buy a new pilot light, input jack nuts, and probably a new back baffle cause mine was ripped when i bought it. I could just duct tape it, but it would look cheap.

I was going to ask this very same question. I'm hopefully going to buy a tube amp in the next few months and this week i tried out a hot rod deville, fender twin and a vox ac30. I found that even though i liked the clean sounds of the Twin more, the hot Rod really surprised me and had a much more usable overdrive sound for almost half the price.
Also, I was wondering if there is a major sound difference between the 4x10 and the 2x12? Because 4x10 seems a little much for me to lug around when there is a 2x12 option. Last edited by jaymz; 09.01.05 at 4:08 AM. |

the deville 2x12 is an excelent amp, not quite my style (i'm an el84 guy) but it is very nice sounding, great reverb and cleans, decent overdrive, great with tubescreamers. very reliable and easy for techs to fix. My friends has been nearly bulletproof since she owned it.

Although the Deville is a decent amp and would work well for you, I like the Traynors more.

I'm also a fan of Traynor over the Fender Hot Rods. They're a little cheaper, too.

I love m deville. it's got a great tone and plenty of volume if needed. my biggest complaint is the master volume knob is really touchy. it's easy to get too loud too quickly.
i prefer the 4x10 because of the increased midrange response.
