Fender twin amp for Phantom Planet/Get Up Kids
kind of tones. Which Fender twin-amp model would be best for getting these kind of tones?

I'm going for that ultra crunchy tone like the rhythm guitar panned right in "California"

Fender probably won't be what you're best looking for. Maybe look at MESA or something.

hmm... kinda ironic that you're asking about twins, but you've got an evil twin username

Both bands are listed in the artist section of Orange amps. Maybe you should check out tehh Orange Rockerverb 50 head. I have heard great things about them.

A twin and a decent overdrive pedal should be able to get that tone, or close to it. The get up kids used a vox ac30 and a silverface twin if I remember right, at least they did aroud the 'something to write home about' time. A 70s marshall jmp might also work for you as well.

when i saw phantom planet open for incubus, one of their guitarists was using a fender blackface amp of some kind and a well-sized pedalboard. so with the right pedals, it will work

Yeah, I had problems with registering my name awhile back so I have two different WRX's on two different computers. Heh
The guitar I'm talking about comes in at about 40 seconds on "California." It's that super crunchy almost springy tone.I have an Orange AD30 combo and a Vox AC30 CC2X but I can't QUITE get that kind of crunch. I've been looking for 1970's JMP's but it's hard to find 'em in good shape and I don't know which year to get, was thinking '78 or '79. I see The Get Up Kids tonight in San Fran so hopefully I'll be able to see in person what kind of stuff they use. Although I'm pretty sure one of em uses a JMP and I wont know what year it is. What's the difference between silverface/blackface? Do older twin's sound different than the reissues? There's the '65 Twin Custom 15 reissue, '65 Twin Reverb reissue and the new Twin Amps...

In the california days PP used mesas. A heartbreaker and a mark IV. One of them used a fender twin with an SD-1 and a Marshall BB-2 for gain. All use p90 guitars. I think the p90's make up most of their sound, so you might want to try the PU's first. Its cheaper than a whole new amp. Lots of crunch comes from them.

I yelled at one of the Get Up Kid's roadies and asked what year their Marshall amp was and he said, "Uhhh, '64." I don't think that's right, though. It had two inputs and six tone controls. My guess is a '78 or '79. Both guitarists mainly used Telecasters and Matt Pryor had a black single coil in the bridge(maybe a seymour duncan) and an all silver single pickup in the neck pos
