Grunge amps

Hey guys,
Long time no speak.

I've managed to get £1000 (roughly $1900) and I'm looking for a new amp for my grunge band. No matter how hard I try, I just cant dial in a good grunge sound in to my Diezel. It seems the amp has some limitations. I still love it to bits though.

Any ideas on a good grunge amp? I'm thinkin circa In Utero Nirvana, Pixies, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth etc, and I've heard that perhaps I should think about a JCM800 or an Orange.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If you want a JCM800 go with the 2210. Pearl Jam uses vintage Marshall Plexi's I believe. Kurt Cobain used Mesa/Boogie Preamps and Marshall cabs.

Plexi, huh?

Would I need a distortion with that?

how heavy of a distortion are you looking for? a really loud overdrive/clean boost should do the trick.

A vintage Marshal Plexi Head. La crem de la crem of Marshalls in my humble opinion Super Leads and JMPs I believe? Not sure about the years but I normally see them around 68-71

Really heavy. I have a Fuzz Factory I use with my Diezel, will that cut it for grunge music?

Heh, Z.Vex, eh? Where are you getting all your botique stuff from? I'm not too familiar with the Fuzz Factory because I've only seen it in a case and never dare touched it. It probably would compliment a Plexi real nice but with Plexi you only really need a Clean Boost to go with it.

Well, if youre ever in England, theres a shop in Devon called Mansons. I go there because Matt Bellamy from Muse has his guitars modified there.

They have really cheap Diezel VH4 heads there (£2099) and it's one of the only places in Britain you can find a Fuzz Factory.

Check them out at www.mansons.co.uk

Phew! I sound like a TV commercial.

for a grunge sound, try using a cheap no name amp that nobody has heard of with a 5 dollar distortion pedal from the pawn shop at the corner

hurray, you have grunge

Most big grunge names (SG, Nirvana) used mesas, from studio preamps to triple recs, to mark IVs. W/1900 you could get a mesa.

a lot of grunge players weren't terribly particular about their tone...kurt used a ds-1 for years. they just needed something loud and distorted...kim thayil stands out as an exception.

for a grunge amp, i'd just get something loud & put your fuzz factory through it...i imagine the fuzz factory is versatile enough to where you can dial in the sound you want and just use the amplifier as an...amplifier. haha...

Orange

definatley go with the AD30 that would be an awsome addition to your set up It can do Grunge/Alternative and still get other great useable sounds. An Orange
a/b'd with a diezel...you lucky bastard!

I'd forget about an amp. Just leave your Diesel on it's cleanest setting and go buy a Boss DS-1 or DS-2, DOD Grunge, or a Sansamp Classic. Your Fuzz Factory would also work if it has a super staticy distortion sound. Most of the good grunge tones I've found are from using a crappy dirt box infront of a clean amp.

Oh, and single coils really help.

And boost your mids up to the roof.

Kirt Cobain never used the distiotion on his Mesa at all, he just liked the fact that it was loud, and that it wasn't a Marshall (he used to tape over the Marshall nameplate on his cabs so people wouldn't know he used them). Also, he used to use Celestion Greenbacks, but changed to Vintage 30's because they sounded harsher and we're a hell of a lot louder.

There's no reason you shouldn't be able to get a good grunge tone with what you already have. I think it's the fact that your looking for the amp to do it that's the trouble, just go clean, and use a crappy, over the top high gain distortion box.
