Marshalls with good cleans

People tend to be pretty critical of Marshall cleans. Are there any Marshall amps with good cleans?

Depends what sound you are after.

But listen to Hullaballo by Muse, Matt is using a Marshall DSL 100 and the cleans are beautiful!

I have a Marshall Valvestate 2000 AVT50 and I think it has good cleans, it just sounds great to me.

The only Marshalls that DONT have good clean channels in my opinion are the JCM 900's, the JCM 800's and the MGs/some of the AVT's. The 800s/900 dont have cleans channels anyway, so that disqualifies them. The best comes from the DSL/TSL's though, as jamie pointe dout. I ahve one, and along with a couple of Fender (Twin Reverb/Vibrolux) amps, and the Vox AC30, it has one of the greatest clean channels in an amp ever.

Actually there are 2 channel JCM 800s and the clean channels on them are pretty decent especially if you roll back the volume.

I agree that the DSL cleans sound great. Tweak the sound in your favor and you'll be very happy.

I really like my cleans on my JCM 900. Especially at band volume when there's just a little bit of grit comin' through. If you want a dead clean, it's probably not your amp. The 6L6 tubes do have a lot of headroom, but don't sound much like anything at room volume. I know lots of people like to poop on 900s (can I say "poop"?) but I think they do a pretty good job. Tom Keeley from Thursday used his 900 all over "Full Collapse" and "War All the Time". And apparently he told his producer to "F@#!! off" when the producer told him he should use a different amp because 900s aren't in vogue.

There's a lesson to be learned here somewhere...

Hahaha...

Now now, don't forget the JC-120...there's some gorgeous SS clean...

Dunno anything about Marshall cleans, but I think Tom Keeley has a nice clean sound, and if he gets it with a 900, more power to him.

Is it just me, or does Thursday's clean sound almost always seem to have chorus on it...??

The JTM-45 is a copy of the Fender Bassman (actually, all the original Marshall designs are, with different tubes and transformers), and it has a tube rectifier instead of a silicone diode. I've heard some really nice, warm tones out of them before, not at all what you'd expect.

I have an AVT50 combo and thought the cleans were nice at bedroom volumes but at louder volumes you have to increase the gain and it dirtys up. Also it's not as trebley as I'd like (I realise the speaker is designed to enhance bass frequencies, and Marshalls are generally a bit bassy).

I now use an all-valve Traynor for clean and the Marshall for dirty. The Traynor is much brighter and touch-sensitive, plus my Big Muff sounds MILES better through it than the Marshall.

Overall the AVT clean is good compared to solid state but can't compete with all-valve (this is probably stating the obvious though!). I expect the higher wattage AVTs give greater clean head room but I haven't tried them so don't know for sure.

I don't think it does... I think he only uses a delay pedal. Most of the modulation comes from the keyboard.

I agree 100%! I use my GE-7 to boost the clean channel so I dont have to use as much gain. I get more volume and I can boost those missing highs too. I've been looking at the new Traynors. Is yours one of the new ones?
