I now use an all-valve Traynor for clean and the Marshall for dirty. The Traynor is much brighter and touch-sensitive, plus my Big Muff sounds MILES better through it than the Marshall.

Overall the AVT clean is good compared to solid state but can't compete with all-valve (this is probably stating the obvious though!). I expect the higher wattage AVTs give greater clean head room but I haven't tried them so don't know for sure.
i've got the avt 50 half stack. The cleans on it are pretty good. I haven't had a problem with adding too much gain to get it up to level. I do actually like the slightly driven sound you get when you crank the gain on the clean side. And i realize it's not the best amp for straight cleans, but it's good enough for me.

My Traynor is a 1979 YGM-3 guitar mate reverb (if that means anything to anyone). It was my dad's and he got it cheap because the shop was totally clueless. Even better I got it free from him when he bought a line 6 amp. I think it's meant to be based on a Marshall plexi and slightly crunches when pushed but I use it clean. I'll post some pics soon when I've finished fiddling with my setup.

Yea I have an MG. The distortion's not bad... but the clean channel sucks.

The gap between good Marshall's and the MG series is so wide, I could drive my hummer through it!!

I've tested the Marshall Valvestate 100W recently and the cleans were pretty damn good - no drama!

There are affordable tube amps out there. You could get a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, a Peavey Classic 30, a Sovtek mig-50 head, a Fender Blues Deluxe. There are options to get a good quality tube amp. You could get one of these tube amps off of ebay for the price of a new solid state amp.

If you can find a JCM600 give it a try. I had a 112 combo of this model and it really had a fantastic clean. It didn't get as brutal as the 900 or 2000 on the lead channel, but it sounds like that's not what you are really going for.
