New Speakers Day ! Sheffield 5150s
I've just swaped the GT-12s in my slant cab to a set of peavey 5150 speakers, 16 ohms, 75 watt each (I think...). If I ever find a few moments I'll try to record a few sample of their sound. As for now, all I can tell is that compared to the gt 12 they are less buzzy with a mid response close to the V30, maybe a little more scooped, and with a cool bottom end : They don't sound muddy when you start turning the bass pot all the way up and they still seem to respond to the lower freqs when you turn the lows down, making lighter sounds pleasent, without that **** load of highs the gt 12s get. These speakers are really good with my VTM, which was way more buzzy with the celestions. Now, I can turn the highs a little more up without making it sound like a can of bees. My Ampeg got a little more clearer with heavier distortions, the sound seems to be much "larger" and ballsy.
I now also know why we use the term "matched speaker/cab" : I had to try them with my buddy's 5150 and check this out - no more buzz, no more can of angry bees ! You still get all the highs you want without that hiss in the higher freqs, you can turn the presence knob all the way up and beside the fact the tone sucks, you will hear little buzz...These speakers are dedicated to this amp for a reason, and now I know why
