Peavey JSX vs. XXX vs. Mesa Single Rectifier
Hi. I am looking for a new amp to get and it came down to these three. I just need to know what you guys think. I need a great distortion with a good clean too. I play mostly metal and hard rock but i also need that great clean sound too. So pick one on the poll and post any advice you have aswell.

I played the JSX and liked it. Dunno if I would buy it over Dual-Recto since I do have a cheap noise gate or can buy a better rack gate.

MEsa Single Rec RECTOVERB will have a better clean than the Single Rec.

Based on the specs, the JSX wins. It's got way more flexibility than the other two. I'm getting one for Xmas, too!

I tried out a XXX a while ago, and in my opinion it sounded and felt better than all the mesa products they had in the store. (triple rec, dual rec, single rec, rectoverb, f30, nomad 45).
Personally Id go for the xxx. The distortion on the ultra channel, was huge gainy, and responsive. The crunch channel was marshally, crunchy and responsive, and the cleans were clean, and dynamic.

I just sold my mesa dual recto and play much along the same lines of music (picked up a Framus Cobra
) but the other guitar player in my band uses a XXX and it sounded better in my opinion then my dual ever did for that style of music at least I mean I loved the mesa but I didn't like it to much for what type of music we were doing just didn't have as much clearity or response to it as I would like it was just kind of flabby and this was after 4 years of tweeking. If you can wait and save up a bit more I suggest a framus cobra I know it's probably out of your price range right now but believe me it is WELL worth the money best amp I have ever played!!! However, if you don't want to wait I suggest the XXX.

i've played the xxx and single recto.
these were all in stores and werent blisteringly loud, but what can ya do...take it or leave it. the single rectifier is really hit and miss. i think 50 watts would be enough for anybody (especially if you got a PA). but ive played a couple and only one of them actually sounded good. 1 sounded like a crappy solid state amp. 1 sounded decent but not as good as any other tube amp in the room. and 1 was great sounding. that was the first one i played and i almost bought it till i tried some other ones. try before you buy. has potential in both channels with all modes, but very hit and miss with quality control. the xxx has the best clean channel of all 3 if you ask me. i've also considered getting this amp. im not a death metal player, but IMO, the 3rd channel is pretty much only good for solos. its AWESOME for solos, but when i tried to do some heavy riffing, i dont know, i didnt like it for whatever reason. the second channel was much more inviting. not as BRUTAL 666, but sounded better overall. this amp had better clarity than the mesa. i came back and played it a second time after a week and wasnt as impressed (was trying out other amps that i preferred, so i may have been biased). i think the xxx is even cheaper most times, and it has more watts and more features...and sounds better if you ask me. the JSX i'm sure is a nicer update of the xxx, but for $1500 or whatever it is now...eh, i cnat justify that. i'd owrk a couple more weeks and get a nicer amp. but i'd do that any way. my two cents, woo hoo. |

You not considering a 5150? You can get both the 5150 and the 5150ii for a steal these days. Musicians Friend is blowing them both out in the $700 range now.

I own a Triple XXX for over two years now, I have demoed a JSX here locally LOT these past few months (found one here in stock at the local music shop and play it EVERY TIME I am there LOL!) and have heard numerous and played various Rectos over the years.
In my conclusion, go with the JSX, it is the most versatile and best sounding amp IMHO that Peavey has ever released and can definately hang with the "big boy" namebrands easily. I am even trying to get one myself here as soon as I find a new home for my Triple XXX. Hope it helps, good lucks! Oh yea Kid_BS, the sale is over, they are all gone... I do love my Triple XXX and I really want a JSX, but I eventually want to get a 5150 or a 5150II as well. I have always wanted to get one just to have besides my Triple XXX, for different sounds and even moreso now that they are no longer under the 5150 moniker.
