question about an idea

i use a music man 65, which has got good clean, and decent distortion, but its not a channel switching amp, im thinking about getting a pedal that's an effects loop (anyone know of any?) and run a peavey rockmaster pre-amp through the effects loop and use that as distortion... activating it by activating the effects loop pedal.. and then from the pedal's output to the amp... im thinking it would work... anyone got any advice or reasons it wouldnt work?

That should work fine. Keeley makes a looper pedal, it's basically a small black pedal that is a switchable loop. You can power it for the channel lights but you don't have to. It's cool because it's little. It's also true bypass.

HBE makes one too called the Bytchn Swytchn Dual looper that can do that too but with 2 loops instead of just one. http://www.homebrewelectronics.com/products.htm

your loop pedal should have something like
input (from guitar)
output (to amp)
send (to preamp)
return (from preamp)

you can just hook the send to the input of the preamp and the return to the output of the preamp, it'll definetely have standard quarter inch outputs and inputs. one thing to consider though is that the preamp will probably output line level, which is significantly hotter than instrument level (what the input on your amp is expecting). This probably won't be an issue as you can just lower the output volume of the preamp, but if your amp has an effects loop (which uses line level) you could probably do something like:

guitar -> y cable (splits it into two signals): one side goes to input of amp, other side goes to input of preamp

and then in your amp's effects loop you could have an a/b pedal connected to the effects loop return that switches between the send of your effects loop (your amp's preamp) and the output of the rockmaster. in this way you'd bypass your amp's preamp when you are using the rockmaster.

did that make sense?

yea it makes sense... but my amp is older so no effects loop... so ill have to get a pedal for it... and i do NOT want to damage my amp with the hotter preamp signal... as i just got my amp back today from a tech because it had something wring with the standby switch/tubes and long story short... my wallet = -$150, which means no new guitar as soon, which means no rockmaster... oh and btw im thinkning vitange fender mustang.. anyone got any suggestions?

i just got my squier cyclone, and only because i couldn't afford a real mustang extremely cool guitars, if you can find a good one i say get it.

YMMV, i don't think a hot preamp signal could damage your amp. it'd probably sound like ass, but then you'd turn it down and it'd be fine.

ok cool so as long as i dont run the risk of blowing anything... that'll definetly be my choice for distortion once i get the cash... the music man has got great cleans and good distortion, but its a hybrid, so it could be a lot better... but yea vintage fender mustangs are on ebay for around 500-700 typically, so i think im probably gonna go for that, but i kind of want a beater so i can shove a humbucker in it and not feel guilty...
