Rediscovering My Mark IV
Hey folks, its been awhile since I posted here. I moved to Hawaii on Christmas Day and have been a little busy. Anyway, I got some advice from a friend I work with regarding my Mark IV. I have always liked this amp. I found great cleans and awesome overdrive tones, but never thought of it as a Metal/ High-Gain amp. My friend made some suggestions that totally changed how this amp sounds, especially with the Lead Channel.
First, I changed the two outer tubes from 6L6's to EL-34's. That by itself was huge. I am still messing with the RHY 1 and RHY 2 Channels, but the Lead Channel is what is really blowing me away. The settings are as follows: Lead Gain-9, Pull Fat; Lead Treble-7; Lead Bass-4; Lead Mid 4.5; Lead Drive-9, Pull Bright; Presence-(between 4-7 depending on which speak I have it hooked up to) and Pull Shift out. Channel Master at 3, Master at 3.
Next, was the five-band EQ. I am currently running the 80 Hertz just below the top, and the 240 just below that. The 750 band, depending on my mood will ride somewhere below half-way, and the the 6600 rides just barely above half-way. No, I did not forget the 2200. That is where the magic happens. I drop that sucker all the way out, no matter what speaker I hook it up to.
Last, I hooked it up to a Mesa Boogie Thiele Cab. For the lead sound, that cab is it for me, at least until I can get a 4x12.
I am finally truly satisfied with the sounds this amp can get on the lead channel. Truly organic, rich, powerful tones that express what I hear in my head.
