Sovtek Mig 50 weight and dimensions
Hey all, I just bought a mig 50 head off of the bay and long story short, I'm trying to ascertain whether or not I'm getting ripped off for shipping. So I was wondering if anyone out there had one or knew what the dimensions of the head were and how much they weighed so that I might get a shipping estimate from USPS myself.
If it helps, I'm in Australia and the seller is in California, postage was listed on the item description as being US$60 for first class international, and then jumped to about US$180 when I went to pay for it this morning. To be fair, the seller did forewarn that shipping would be more expensive than the estimate, but a threefold jump is more than a little suspicious to me. I also think if you are using the shipping calculator on the item listing and it is that inaccurate, then you should probably not bother and have the buyer pm you. But that is another discussion again...

Sounds good, man. I've paid anywhere between US$15 (years ago) and US$40 just for pedals, and you're a good two thousand kilometers (as the crow flies) farther from the US than I am. Not to mention for some reason (can anybody explain that?) flights to Australia will only go east, which means it will cover something like 80% of bloody Earth's diameter.
Actually sounds cheap...

You must not have any experience with "shipping".
In the USA.......you could not ship that, properly packed, amp from Coast to Coast for 60 USD. Best |

Yeah it cost me $90 to ship my MIG 100 from TX to CA and I had packed it myself. Those amps are stupid heavy. I think the transformers were built in a Russian anvil factory.

Cheers guys, looks like I'll pony up then.
Yeah trem, I've actually purchased quite a lot of things in my rig from overseas, including my carvin t100, which weighs a tonne, but it was a few years ago, and my memory is foggy, so I wasn't sure if the shipping costs were comparable to that (as I seem to recall it certainly didn't break $150 in freight costs) or if I'm just getting old and everything seems expensive to me. I was not aware though that the flights only went east though, asat. That seems counter intuitive, the only thing I can think of that might explain it is the lack of land mass in the pacific ocean developed enough to support that amount of air traffic control...of course that might just highlight the fact that I know nothing about air traffic control. Haha! Thanks roba, wow that is expensive. I'd heard they were heavy, but I wasn't sure what the go was. Maybe they were fashioned from melted down fragments of the iron curtain...ok, I gotta ease off on the dad jokes now. How much would you say the 100 weighs?

What I meant was YOU personally.
Keep in mind, if you buy something from a business, their shipping rates are WAY lower than an individual. I have had to pay more to ship a speaker than what it costs Musicians Friend to ship an entire amp. Person to person shipping is just plain expensive. I fully understand your suspicion, when you saw the actual cost. I am kind of surprised it was not more than that. Anyway..... Nice rig you are building "Down There". Best |

Yeah trem, I've never had to ship from Aus to OS before. I guess with the cost of fuel skyrocketing in the past decade its really hurt us consumers when it comes to stuff like this (not to mention grocery prices and every time I put fuel in my car).
Yeah, I didn't say anything to the seller, but it would make more sense to me not to use a shipping calculator that is not only consistently wrong but has been acknowledged by the seller as being so. My rig is becoming more and more simple. I'm playing in a stoner/doom band now, so I don't need my complicated rack stuff anymore. Too many features. I played it tonight at rehearsal for what will probably be the last time though, I will admit I'm a bit sad to be letting it go. I feel like I'm trading the death star for mir. But I am excited to be getting a new amp, so you know...
