Speaker suggestions for Vox AC4TV?

I've got a newish Vox AC4TV combo that sounds good, but somewhat boxy with the stock 10 inch speaker (purported to be Celestion I think but can't recall off hand). Would anyone have any suggestions as to a good replacement speaker to overcome this?

I know it can be done - I read a review of the Vox somewhere where the guy replaces the speaker and all boxiness disappeared. I also have a Silverface Champ that has a smaller speaker than the Vox (maybe 6 inch) that has a lot of punch and bottom end, especially for its size, and it puts the Vox to shame.

I've thought about getting the extension cab that goes with the head, but I can't seem to find it for sale by itself, and I'd rather keep it all self contained. The stock speaker is 16 Ohm which I think limits options for other cabs; not sure how it affects choice of a replacement speaker.

Thanks.

Guitar - Celestion - Guitar, Bass & Pro Audio Speakers

This is what I pulled up, I can't remember what was in my 4x10 cab I had, but I'm almost sure it may have been the Greenbacks.... I did like them

Legend Series | Eminence Speaker

Also one of these may be a great option and come in 16 Ohm...

Warehouse Guitar Speakers | Let there be Tone!

And for on the budget, these guys make some really convincing speakers! Many come in 16 Ohm as well

WGS speakers are a great buy for the price.

Thanks for the replies.

Speakers are one think I'm not too confident about. There's so many variables (like pickups).

I guess I'm after something that will accentuate the Vox-ness of the amp (so something like vintage specs) and get rid of the boxiness.

I've looked up Celestion, Eminence, Weber, Jensen WGS (who offer the choice of 'American and 'British' toned speakers, but oddly there is no 10' option for the latter).

I'd prefer to buy locally if possible. There's a company near me that sells Weber and Jensen among others - Webers look like they might be too big to fit in the amp. Then Jensens are cheaper but more associated with Fender amps so perhaps less well suited to a classic Vox tone? Jensen P10R

Then there's the Celestion Greenbacks which are the industry standard? eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d

One last thing: the amp is 4 watts RMS so would it matter if the speaker was over-rated significantly e.g. 20watts+ I know you get less (no) speaker break up with higher rated speakers, but will they still function? That is, do some speakers need an minimum input to operate efficiently? Or do I have no idea what I'm talking about? The speakers I've been looking at are in the 15-30w range.

My personal opinion is I'd go for the Greenback, I love the lush breakup they have, can be gritty, but gets a decent clean as well. Very vintagy sounding. I think the open back design may help it.

And Jensons, with my experience always seem to have that "sparkle", why they're associated with Fender amps. Even in a 4x12 Cab, they have it, can be good or bad, depends on the sound you're going for, but can work closely to a flat response speaker with an "edge" to it.

I have no experience with Weber though, so I hope someone can chime in about them.

And as far as speakers go, no worries, you're not pushing them hard enough to blow them. You should be fine wattage wise. As long as you keep the impedance right, you should be golden

Great, thanks for the feedback. Celestions seem to be more associated with British amps including Vox so it seems a good option. They're readily available too. The 10" Greenback is promoted as sounding like a 12" which I think might be good. So I was on the money with Jensens!

Any opinions on Webers or other brands?

Something vintage spec would be more like this

Alnico - Celestion G10 Gold - Celestion - Guitar, Bass & Pro Audio Speakers

The old Vox tone came from some different speakers, but if I'm not mistaken, I believe it was the Alnico magnet.....
