Speakers

I have not that much knowledge when it comes to amp speakers. I know that when I was hunting for a Vox ac30, everywhere I read said to upgrade to the Celestion Blue Alnico, or the Greenbacks because I would be much happier with the tone.

As I sure we all are, I am on the never ending quest for better tone. I am playing through a fender evil twin now, and was curious if anyone had any speaker suggestions for me. The amp has 2 12 inch Fender speakers.. 100 watt 8 ohm. The amp also has 2 wattage settings, 100 or 25.. I always use the 25 watt setting, I just think it sounds better. I'm not sure I know where to start looking. I play all kinds of music...not very much country or heavy high gain stuff...

This is tough cause it's not like I can go to the music store and ask to 'try them out'.

any help? suggestions on where to start looking, or how to start looking?

I asked a simliar question about my lil' Fender Blues Jr. (yes two very diff. amps) but the folks that always try to help out has this question for me :

"what type of tone are you looking for ?" - regardless of what genre you play !

a) Vintage or
b) more Modern

The answer that i got at both SD Forum & the Fender Forum was this :

Vintage = Jensen P12N or Weber if you can afford it.

Modern =C Vintage 30's

I believe, 'the rule of thumb' is, that Jensen & Weber are slightly brighter & the V30's a tad more on the 'darker' side of things.

I know some of the other GG-folk will bw able to give you a much, much more detailed description, and way more accurate . . .

. . . so lets see what they have to say !

What do you think of the gain channel on your amp ?

lol.... thats the first question everyone asks me... the gain channel. I really like the gain channel. I posted this in a previous thread about the amp:

I think that people are dissapointed in the gain channel because they believe the amp will give them Fender Clean with Mesa or (insert any high gain amp here) dirty channel.

The amp just won't. Just like most amps built for High gain distortion will not give you beautiful cleans (not that it won't be good clean tones in those amps.. but there is a reason people love the clean of a Fender Twin or Vox AC30 etc...)

There is nothing wrong with the dirty channel, as a matter of fact I like the way it sounds. I use it with just enough gain that when I dig into the guitar it breaks up nicely, and when I play soft its nice cleans. So... effectively I have 3 nice clean tones from the amp... each one getting progressively grittier. When I need a lot of gain I use a stomp box or box's.

It has to be the sound you are looking for. I love the diversity of the amp.... efffectively I have beautiful cleans and a "3" channel amp. Reverb is great and an effects loop. Its super easy to retube and bias myself. You can adjust effects loop and reverb levels, along with what channels they will be on. Not to mention incredible head room in it... and its unholy loud for a 2/12 combo.

MMmmmmm, OK, so i understand the "No-Mesa distortion" channel, but if possible, to what other dist. can you compare the gain of this lovely Fender ?

The addd says, "hi-gain", but hi-gain means diff things to diff folks.
My idea of hi-gain is a DSL/TSL on 50% dist. !
My cousin's idea is a Crate BlueVoodoo/Krank Krankenstein at 100% dist !!! (...too me, that is not a musical-dist. that is just mush )

I am still on the look-out for an amp that will fit my, "primitive garage blues come psycgobilly" like a glove !
In other words an amp that will render 80% of my dirt-boxes, useless !

Is there any site that i can hear this beauty in action ?

Thanx

hmm... I'll see what I can do to get some sound bites up. You can hear the amp in action on recordings at myspace.com/themayanfactor
