I ordered 2 40 watt Ceramic Tone Tubby Speakers with the H1E Hempcone to mix with my G12-65s and get rid of the V30s.
Anyone else have Ceramic or Alnico Tone Tubby speakers and, if so, do you have them mixed ..? http://www.tonetubby.com/ |

Hopefully you will have better luck than a guy I knew last year. He put Tone Tubby speakers in a a 70's silverface Twin and said that they completely muddied up the tone. Something that's pretty remarkable for a Twin. I'm not certain exactly which models he used though.

I got a Tone Tubby matched with Celestion V30 speakers and they compliment each other very well.
I always found the V30s had that mid range flub that was great for a thicker heavy sound but scaled back the articulation. The Tone Tubby has a very focused and tight bass and not as much mids as the V30 but it's still a very fat sounding speaker. I can see why people may find TBs muddy but compared to V30s these breath a awful lot more. I was able to drop the bass on my Soldano to 4 and the articulation jumped up but without any loss of bottom end. I even jacked the mids to 6 and now the amp is all ready to 'plug & play' go. With Soldano amps the EQ knobs are very sensitive as well as the pre-amp. You can really hear the increase in the roar as you move the gain up. I wasn't able to hear or feel the transition from a 6l6 Plexi type tone to a full blown deep sludge as much with all V30s. With a mix of g12-65 and V30 speakers the tone was more dynamic and articulate but the g12-65 didn't have the tight bottom of the Tone Tubby. Bottom line : I like ceramic Tone Tubby speakers for overdriven to much heavier tones. For clean to slightly overdriven tones I'm still a Greenback man. PS: Careful when installing the Tone Tubby. The huge ceramic magnet will rip the screwdriver out of your hand. |

I had read that those speakers require a bit of break in time before they reach their tonal optimality- it think it was on a Tonequest review. It seemed that it was recommended that the speakers be run w/ a constant tone (drone?) for a certain amount of hours. I think it came off a link from univalve.net, which may now be updated as some of their threads have long lives. It was a rather inconclusive article and only made me more curious. It (univalve.net) is a pretty interesting site- highly recommended even if you don't own a THD.

I've only played through them in the 2x12 cab that's paired up with with the Crate V30H head.....I thought they sounded really good with that amp.
