I have a newer VJ head that I have done nothing to but replace the tubes with some NOS RCAs. There are whole sites dedicated to modding these amps. Many of the mods are for resolving problems with the earlier production runs. The manufacturer actually used some of these mods in later productions. I really like my VJ. I usually run it through a 4X10 or a 4X12 cab. With a good OD and a dirt box you can do a lot with a new one stock. I don't care for the combos. The little speaker sucks. However, I'm told that the VJ 1X12 cabs are the best bang for the buck out there. The head and two of them seems to be a great little setup.

You have quite and impressive setup. I joined the Navy and sold all my equipment, and am just now starting back up. Next week I'm looking into getting a '67 Bassman.

Check out Harley Bentons too. They're the same thing under a different name and alot cheaper. I'm trying out the 15 Watt version on Wednesday. Thomann.de sells them in Europe, but to ship them across the pond might still be cheaper, but I'm not sure.

Thanks. Truthfully I have much more stuff, guitars and amps. I'm an old guy that has been doing this a long time. I just listed what I use the most lately. Frankly, with a lot of amps to choose from I use the VJ or the 18 watt Marshall head most of the time. Sometimes I A/B the Tremolux and the Marshall at a larger gig. I like to keep the same pedal board and use my amps dimed. For most gigs you don't need more than 20 watts unless the drummer is a monster, even then I just use acrylic barrier pannels. With a decent PA th 5 watt VJ works fine and you can hear everything on stage. The VJ is also a great little studio amp. Those old Bassmans are great amps also. But if you have to turn it down to use it you would probably be better served with something else smaller. A lot of people use power soaks, but IMHO it is better and usually cheaper just to get a smaller amp.

I too have a VJ head and run it through a 4x12 cab. Ive not mod'd mine at all. I prefer to play single coil guitars through it but it is really a great, cheap piece of equipment...

It is a great piece of cheap equipment! I paid $70 for it off craigslist here in VA.

I'm not even sure what I'm gonna do with the Bassman. I got a good deal on it so I couldn't pass it up. I have a thing for old equipment. But I'm excited to check it out and play around with it.

Cheap does not always equal bad. You can get a brand new VJ for $129 no tax or shipping all day long. I use mine with an old Japanese Squier Strat in a band with another guitarist using $10K worth of gear easy. He can't believe the tone I get out of it. The VJ is a little hissy, but so what. I always love a good noise floor. It covers a multitude of evils. That little VJ was the best $100 I ever spent.

I totally agree, I believe great tones can be had with lots of cheap equipment. In fact my favorite guitar through that amp is an Aria Pro II FS. Definitely cheap but sounds great!

I bought it. It sounded great though the person I bought it from replaced the speaker with an Emince 75 Watter. The sound is rich is warm but not too dark. The tone knobs didn't do a whole lot and the volume control is very un-Fenderish. I mean it's not that you reach 80% of you highest volume after 3. The volume itself is high enough for my needs I hope and if not I can put a clean boost before it, though I doubt that will happen. It did not break up by itself and the dirty sounds with my OCD weren't fantastic but there were definitely some useable ones in there.

Sorry for all the short sentences...

I have one of the older heads with just the volume knob. I really can't complain though. I love the naturally overdriven tones I get from it.
