Valve King or XXX ?

Looking for a cheap tube head for a saturated metal sound. Going for stuff like Meshuggah, A Life Once Lost, Norma Jean type stuff. I know I won't get that exact sound but anywhere near that in the price range will do. Other options welcome to. Thanks.

From what I'm told, the Valveking is very good value for money.

I'd say check em both out.

They're totally different price ranges. Either one should be fine though (except the Valve King may need a distortion box for some sounds). If you're thinking about the XXX, why don't just buy a Carvin V3 then? I actually like those Crate Stealth's though, what's not working for you?

its gonna be alot easier to get those tight metal sounds out of the xxx, than it will be the valve king.

XXX, I had 2 valvekings, both broke very quickly...

...the first the input cut out on it, which meant it had to be sent back to peavey to be fixed :/, and thus be destroyed in transit on its return

...the second, the power transformer (yes, you read the right) fell of and was hanging by a single wire, attached itself to the speaker and thus I found it when I got home...not happy...

...

Good choice going with the Boss. An EH pedal would probably just scratch the guy.

I have a valve king and I used to have a triple-XXX. the triple-XX was great for the heavy sounds of metal, but the valve king can do it too with the proper eq settings. also, the valve king sounds better into a closed-back cab than it does with the combo speakers built in. for just a bit more than the V3, you could get a hughes and kettner switchblade (the amp that replaced my XXX) and have a much wider variety of tones at your disposal.

I second the H&K switchblade option.

Ditto, another Triple XXX owner here...

I like the Valveking, don't get me wrong it's a good amp for the price, but it's Chinese made and IMHO, not an equivilent example of Peavey's USA made products. I've put my Triple XXX through some serious crap, it has yet to give me any serious problems and it's 4 years old now. I personally just don't have much faith in Chinese craftsmenship personally, even if it has a Peavey badge on it. Hopefully time will prove me wrong if Peavey is true to thier reputation.

For all things metal, the Triple XXX will deliever in spades the crunch channel can do the classic metal sounds and the ultra channel handles all things in modern metal. Some tweaking to it will make it far more flexable too (think low to mid gain sounds) and get it in the ballpark of amps twice it's value IMHO.

Not as far as you might think, I see Triple XXX's going for like anywhere around $500 to $700, maybe $800 at the most on ebay. List right now for a new Valveking head is $500. On a more personal note... As much as I wanted to like Carvin's new V3, it just didn't blow me away enough to want to swap it for the Triple XXX sad to say. Your milage may vary though.

The stealth was not technically mine. I was borrowing it from a friend on a long term basis since he does not play anymore, but he told me he was going to sell it so I need to get a head asap. Money's tight so I was looking at cheap high gain heads for my application. The stealth to me does not have enough low end for me.

I have a Valveking head, and its pretty decent for the money. I don't care for the dirty channel. I use a Boss ME-8 into the input of the clean channel (set to the metal zone setting) which gives it a sound I'm looking for. I also power the loop with a Electro Voice 31 band EQ. I paid $400 semi new on ebay. Its a better deal then I could of got for any amp in that price range..

If you're going to go peavey and play metal, i suggest one of the 5150 amps over the XXX any day. I like the concept of the valve king with the blendable class a and solid state thing, but it's more something that i would tinker around with in my shop for a half hour than something that i would own myself.
My guitarist has a 5150 II, and it sounds killer for detuned, chunky, grind/thrash/death stuff...
we also have an original 5150 that we haven't had a chance to really use. i don't really know what the difference between the two will be.

So how are the features of the Valveking as I am thinking of getting a combo to retire the JMP as living-room amp?
