Yea, the DR is a serious contender. If I go the DR route I could certainly pick up a couple of things since the DR reissues are pretty affordable.

Im gonna second the Laney VC30. Its got a great clean channel, a nice marshall-y overdrive channel, sounds amazing pushed and with dirt pedals, I use for distortion tones in the post hardcore/metal region. if thats not versitile I dont know what is

oh and it looks sexy hehe.

out of my amps,, the one that has been the most versatile in the recording studio is my Crate V3112. i used it a little on our first album and have been using it much more on our second (which we are in the middle of) the amps overdrive is smooth and the clean channel takes my pedals very well. its small enough to move quickly around the studio and the 12" speaker gets all the balls i need. super amp! cant recommend it enough

I am a Fender man.... Thats all I would play..but you need a two channel amp. and really a tube is what you need. If you have the cash get a SHIVA.. amazing cleans. a great gain channel. and you get a boost for either channel add that too a ts9 or another boost pedal . and you have so many options you wont now what to do with yourself..BOGNER SHIVA thats your best bet.

Not the first time some one has said Shiva when I asked this question. Go figure there are zero Bogner dealers in Ontario. I'll see if I can hunt one down. The inability to audition the amp is a deal breaker for me though.

Mark's, like the TriAxis, are a little intimidating. Lots of tones in there. Hard to coax them out. I do intend to look at a Lone Star Special though. And I've already tracked down the SF/BF DRs and Tweed Deluxe's in town. Plus a Laney VC30. All of those are to be played during the search tomorrow.

It'd be a choice between Fender and Marshall. I don't know any amp that does both. I'd go Marshall, but for the kind of music you said it'd have to be Fender. Like a Vibroking or something...

Engl SE.

That's everything you'd ever need...

For portabiliy/flexibility you could get 8U rack case and put an engl e570/e580 preamp in there.
Slam an Engl E 840/50 in there alongside a mesa 20:20.

The beauty of that would be that you could run a different power-amp for even more flexibility. How about haveing the choice between:

100 watts 6L6
50 watts 6L6 stereo
40watts el84 mono
20watts el84 stereo

Also you have the option to swap out poweramps for each session. If you knew you absolutely NEEDED an el34 sound for a session, you could rent out (or even buy) a marshall 50 watt poweramp and put it in your rack. That way, the 'new' setup won't be completely alien to you. The Engl pre-amps are more than flexible enough, and the more you use it, the more you will realise how ridiculously versatile it is...

Also this method allows you to expand the rig over time.

How cool would that be?

100 watts 6L6 mono
50 watts 6L6 stereo
100 watts EL34 mono (with the marshall)
50watts EL34 stereo (with the marshall)
40watts el84 mono
20watts el84 stereo

All inside a 10U road ready flightcase (most likely with wheels ...

That would be my rig anyway. With the right instrument I can't imagine a tone you couldn't get out of that.

I would bring one amp, my custom Plexi head I had made for me. One channel, MV, and the best tone ever.

So. The deed is done.

I off loaded the Rect-O-Verb and my Rectifier cabinet. A little sad to see the cab go, but my back was relived.

I've traveled just a little over 300 km's in the last 48 hours trying out amps. Played a (broken) BF DR and a so-so SF DR. The VC30 Laney. The Lonestar Special. Both Koch amps plus another not on the list. The Chubster. A VHT Pittbull 45. A Carr I can't remember the name of now. A Bassman RI. A BF DR RI.

And in the end. After it all got played and I took my notes in my little book (I swear the sales guys thought I was nuts when I pulled out the notebook) I kept coming back to a Koch. A Twintone (not the II, the original). And that's what I went with.

While I really liked the clean tone from the '65 BF DR I played, it was in serious disrepair (the volume was fluctuating up and down as I played it) and even with the $2k CAD price tag it was going to need another $300-400 in work to make in playable. And even then it seemed fragile. The mid-70's SF DR compared to the Koch and was a little more expensive. The Laney was a disappointment. Rivera too. The Koch was slightly used and the price and features and, most importantly, sound just hit all the right spots when I played it. I think eventually I'd like to own a BF DR as a second or third amp, but right now I can only bank roll one and the Koch Twintone is it.

Thanks for all the opinions. It was very helpful and hella fun too boot.
