I think you mean cabinets. A 1x15 will do, perhaps a 4x10 would be good too.

At least ONE 1x15 combo or stack or ONE 4x10/6x10/8x10 stack...and an amp that can put out at LEAST 150-200 watts, especially if you have wankers (guitar players ) and a drummer fighting for frequency space.

A 4x10/1x15 stack is the way to go for the bigger clubs/bars/venues, or in general if that's how you roll.

Me personally: 2x15 cabinet, LOUD amp

headroom in the amp (ie if yr guitarist is using 100 watt valve head, you want about 200/300 watts in yr bass head) is really, really important in these situations. Bass can often be the last thing that gets considered in the mix, and gets lost easier on stage. Most people I've seen get by with a 4x10 or a 1x15, but there's a hell of a lot of fun to be had with the amount of air you move with a couple of 4x10s

but it will sort of depend on who you're playing with and what sort of music, you know? For some stuff like an SWR 1x15 would be great, but if you're playing in a band that sounds like Sunn o))), you might want something a little louder...

You need an DI-box! If you have one good DI-box, you don't NEED an amp, but the sound is pretty sterile with just an DI-box...

Also, it depends on what type of scene you're playing. If you can't mic the amp you need an with ALOT of power, 300w? Mostly though the amps are micked, so something between 100w and 300w.

Also, if you play in an all-acoustic band you don't really need that much... Depends on the band, the gig and stuff like that.

relying on only a DI sort of means relying on the venue(s) having enough PA inputs spare, and a decent amount of foldback. And you're right, it does sound heaps sterile.

You want a good 300 watts and an 8x10 or a 4x10 & 1x15 etc. to be covered for pretty much any gig.

And a backup amp can be handy, if you can fit in in your car with all that gear

While it doesn't quite have the same effect as having a 300 watt amp onstage, a good alternative to bringing a backup amp is something line a Line6 pod or an MXR DI box, which you can use and go right into the PA.

My guitarist has been using a 50watt all tube randall, and I can easily hear myself with my ampeg b2r (200 watts into 1 cab, 350 into 2) into a peavey 15".

When he upgrades to a mesa dual rectifier I think I will pick up the matching peavey 2x10" and I think I should be fine exspecially being that we're not playing arenas or anything huge.

Everyone is wrong, the only way somebody could play a gig is with

3 fullstacks
16 combos
and 2 smoky amplifiers

That and only that, is the proper amount. The even idea over less amps is laughable....HAHAHAHAHA

BUT HONESTLY

My old bassist played with a Marshall Bass 4X12 from the 80's that was rewired for a very high amount and through a Mesa 400 plus head. BUT, the bassist for my bar band would play the same room with this little 1X15 and a mesa 60 watt bass head.

to each his own, if you ALWAYS play places with PAs or very small places you can get anything. If you do lots of hall shows, grab an 6X10 or an 8X10 and have fun.
