berarduur is on a distinguished road
I worked on some festivals in the catering a long time ago

So I could see Bush perform on stage at that time

He used a Fender strat (green) with EMG like pickups. Other then that he got a Jaguar. Amps were Mesa's w/3 cabs.

The other guitar player used a strat the whole time

I was too young then to clearly interest in guitar stuff and such.....

I saw them when toured their Sixteen Stone album. At that particular show, Gavin used a Jag into a Mesa. I couldn't see what was there for pedals. Nigel was using a couple Strat + models with Lace Sensors. I believe the amps were Marshalls, but it was a long time ago. I'm also pretty sure tha Nigel was using an Expandora.

Side note: Hum was one of the opening acts they sounded great. Cranked Oranges will do that for your tone though. Their set pretty much blew everybody else away.

i'm pretty sure he was using lace sensors in his strats. not a huge fan, but they did have some pretty cool guitar tones. the chemicals between us is a huge sounding riff.

Ok, here's what Gavin really played. The things I list here I am certain of. For the recording of Sixteen Stone and some VERY early performances he played a purple '65 Jazzmaster with stock pickups and a Bigsby tremolo installed which you can see in the "Little Things" and "Everything Zen" videos. For the Sixteen Stone tour, he was equipped with two sunburst colored Jazzmasters that I'm pretty sure were both reissues. They were equipped with Seymour Duncan original parallel axis Trembuckers instead of stock pickups. At least one of them had a Schaller roller bridge installed with a stop tailpiece screwed into the wood between the trem and bridge, used much as a "BuzzStop" is normally used (which you can see if you look up the PinkPop performances on YouTube, or the Glycerine performance at spring break.) All the while, he was playing through Mesa/Boogie dual rectifier trem-o-verb amps, sometimes using a Fender Twin for clean tones. He sometimes used an Expandora pedal, though I don't know why since the Mesa's already had nice distortion and that's usually what you hear. Once Razorblade Suitcase came around, he played a black '61 Jazzmaster with the Trembuckers installed, but quickly switched to a green '50s reissue Stratocaster relic that had red/silver/blue lace sensors. He played that guitar for most of the tour. After Razorblade Suitcase, he pretty much stuck with Strats with Seymour Duncan hot rails or cool rails. If you want the Sixteen Stone sound, get a Jazzmaster and play through the rythym circuit with stock pickups and a Mesa/Boogie or at least a Big Muff to imitate the sound of one. If you wand the LOOK of the Sixteen Stone period, get the sunburst Jazzmaster and put the Trembucker pickups in it. That won't sound quite like Sixteen Stone though because the sound you hear on the recorded album is actually with the stock pickups (believe it or not) cause at that point he only had the purple Jazzmaster which he bought pretty much to copy one of his favorite artists at the time, Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine.

I have the Guitar World from 1996. I am positive that there is no mention of a Big Muff, and I am positive Gavin is no gear aficionado. I can dig it up, if necessary....I know the Expandora gets a mention.

I know he never used a Big Muff, I was just saying that it is a good substitute for Mesa/Boogie sounding distortion for those who do not have access to one. I have that same Guitar World mag also, i think. The one with the green cover?

His pu's are lace sensors not emg, he uses the expandora over the amp distor cause there's something in grunge-alternarock that you just cant nail with amp distor.

From allexperts.com:

Gavin now uses a Fender strat,a Gibson 330 and a '57 Les Paul Gold Top.He as inumerous jazzmasters('61 black,'65 purple, etc.)and they stand as his favourite type of guitar, but he doesn´t use them anymore because live he couldn´t be heard next to Nigel´s Gibsons.
When it comes to amps, live he uses Fender Tremolux, but for recording he´s got Mesa Trem-o-Verb,Mesa Blue Angel and some old seventies Fender Twin.
His effects boxes are Bixonic Expandora,MXR Micro Amp,Electro Harmonix and Full Tone.

i wonder if he use the same on Institute....

I think Institute was ESPs w/ EMGs through Marshalls and other pedals... NOTHING to write home about, which is sad, because I loved Gavin's tone for the longest time.

Oh, and after Institute I realized how much I really missed Bush.

what does nigel play? i've heard a little bit of everything, strats, pauls, lp jr's, through a mesa of some sort and he collects old and rare pedals. i dunno, neither of them may have the best tone but they sure played well together. especially when i was in 6th grade

I´ve seen live TV performances where he definitely used Custom Audio Electronics amps besides the Mesas...

Oh and Gavin used Fuzz sounds from time to time - Fulltone ´69? Read somewhere that he has one...
