i've been looking for a violin/cello bow, but they are really expensive and it's been hard to find any of those in 2nd hand. i don't want to spend big bucks on a thing like that...

you probably wouldn't want one second hand though, I don't think bows would get better with age like the violin does. but finding a slightly used one would work great, I bet.

My violin bow was £10 and it's ace.

Violin bows won't get you the Ros sound, really, Zeppelin, F'sure, but not Ros. You will need the cello bow, and you will need stacks of rosin and, the masses of reverbs. It's bloody hard and expensive to get that kind of sound.

As for getting Page live properly - as used with the Les Paul - you will need to mod your bridge so the strings arch too - thats an important part of how he does it. I've had mine arched ever so slightly (sanded, basically) and it works a treat.

What about a violin bow on a tele? How would that work out?

really, you should get an alesis reverb unit and just turn the reverb up 100% wet and you'll get the same sound without all the annoyances of a cello bow. All a bow is really good for is looking cool.

um... an antique Tourte or Pecatte violin bow will go for $100,000 - $200,000 USD....

Vintage style Teles with 3 saddles and a wider radius fretboard are "ok..." If again you're referring to the sound on Led Zeppelin one, both Dazed and Confused and How Many More Times, well, there was a lot of studio engineering going on there in terms of actually getting that sound. Tele pickups really aren't suited to that bowing sound. Also, you'll note, in both cases he's really just playing one string - Upper and lower E.

The LP (or a humbucker carvetop guitar, I guess) produces perfect sounds for bowing - it really does - if it sounds dodgy on one pickup, flick to the next one and it sounds great - I'm not sure why the strings resonate in certian areas causing one pickup to be better than the other for a seemingly random area of the fretboard - like I said, trial and error certianly.

Have you got Jimmy doing Dazed And Confused on the Telecaster but live? Compare that to him doing the Les Paul live - the "bow" sound is much more natural with the Lester, deeper, etc, plus he gets more strings use, doing mini-chords comprising the upper or lower 3 strings, a lot more versatile.

ebows actually do sound pretty similar. you can play Svefn-G-Englar PERFECTLY with an ebow.

I couldn't agree more. I listen to ( ) while laying in bed just thinking. And "Starlafur" and Untitled #1 are two of the most beauitful things I've ever heard.

PS- Sorry for so many posts about post-rock guitar, It's just that I've been so obssesed with that kind of music lately. I have a feeling that it won't be a passing trend either.
Hey! way to go with the '76 twin!! Canada rocks- it's my drummer's home. I think I'll visit him there this summer.

Could you compare the cost/learning curve of the ebow and the cello bow?
