The Joy Formidable

Just found out about this band and they can sound pretty huge. From what I can see online, guitarist Ritzy Bryan uses strats (some with hot rails pu's) into a variety of small combos (Music Man, Marshall, Fender) through... *inhales*

BBE Sonic Stomp, Boss EQ stompbox (x2), Boss Line Selector, Boss Digital Delay 5 or 6 (x2), Boss Phase Shifter, Boss Blues Driver, Line 6 Echo Park, Line 6 DM4, Line 6 FM4, MXR 10-band EQ, E-H Holy Grail.

No clue what goes where past the line selector.
Anyone knows more?

I don't know the pedal order, but I'm intrigued to find out. The sound on their new album is huge. I have tickets to see 'em at Reading Festival. Have you seen them? Do you know if she uses any of those pedals as loopers?

Thanks so much for tagging your post, and I think searching before starting a new thread, because I didn't find any previous threads on this band.

I think this picture answers your question.

March 7th, 2011 - The Joy Formidable pedalboard

We have...

Fender Channel Switcher (on ground)

Boss TU-2 Tuner
MXR M-108 10-Band Equalizer
Electro-Harmonix Micro POG
Boss LS-2 Line Selector
Boss GE-7 Equalizer
Boss DD-3 Digital Delay
Boss DD-3 Digital Delay
Boss GE-7 Equalizer
Line 6 Verbzilla
Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter
Boss TR-2 Tremolo
Line 6 FM-4
Line 6 DM-4

(Powered by a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2+)

Below is my nonsensical research if you care to go through it:

-------------------------------------------------------------
I did a Flickr search, and found this picture of their bassist playing a Fender Jaguar Bass through a Fender Rumble 350 Combo.

Here's a shot of the guitarist playing a Sunburst Maple neck Strat with the hot rails in the bridge as you mentioned, and here's a shot of her playing through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.

This may be the same guitar, mostly covered in black tape.

Here's a pedalboard shot of hers in '09 that has:

Fender Channel Switcher

Fender PT-10 Tuner
Electro-Harmonix Micro POG
MXR 10-Band Equalizer
Boss DS-1 Distortion
Boss GE-7 7-Band Equalizer
Boss DD-3 Digital Delay
Boss DD-3 Digital Delay
Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter
Boss GE-7 Equalizer

Here's a shot of her pedalboard from Feb 2011, that sounds more like the board you saw, we can make out (not in this order, as I really cant see it):

Boss TU-2 Tuner
MXR M-108 10-Band Equalizer
Line 6 DM-4
Line 6 FM-4
Electro-Harmonix Micro POG
Boss GE-7 Equalizer
Boss LS-2 Line Selector
Boss GE-7 Equalizer
Boss DD-3
Boss DD-3
Line 6 Verbzilla

Fender Channel Switcher on floor

That's about all I can see, here's another shot from that same show, where we can see the Boss TR-2. And another shot. Here we can see some of the bassist's board, which looks equally as big.

My real question is what is that Line Selector switching between?

Also it looks like the BBE Sonic Stomp and Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail aren't in that photo... where did you see those?

Dude, you're a damn searching machine! I hadn't thought of searching Flickr and I've found more. This picture tells me what I thought was a Blues Driver is actually a TR-2.

Seems I mistook the Micro Pog for a Sonic Stomp. Didn't pay attention to the knobs.

The Holy Grail was sitting on her Fender amp. I didn't see her use it, it might have been constantly on on a subtle setting.

I'm positive both Boss Delays were on the same signal path, but otherwise I have no clue what goes into what.

As for loopers, there were samples played, but they didn't come from her rig. They probably came from the bass player, who had a JamMan on his board.

Thanks!

Hmmm, well that picture is from Oct 16, 2010...

There are quite a few differences to her current board, notably that on that board there is a:

Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz
Boss OD-3 Overdrive
Boss TR-2 Tremolo
Line 6 Verbzilla

So I'm gonna say that yeah we had the Echo Park wrong, I took your word on that and the BD-2.

So I'll update my post above to reflect the TR-2 and Verbzilla, still can't be sure on if the 3-knob Boss pedal she currently uses is the OD-3 or TR-2 though, but since she has the DM-4 on the new board, I'm going to assume that handles her distortion needs.

Also from this shot (of the same show), we can see the other side of the Boss DD pedals, and determine that they are DD-3s. So just for the sake of completeness, that makes her Oct 16, 2010 pedalboard as follows:

Fender Channel Switcher

Boss TU-2 Tuner
Electro-Harmonix Micro POG
Boss LS-2 Line Selector
MXR M-108 10 Band EQ
Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz

Boss TR-2 Tremolo
Boss OD-3 Overdrive
Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter

Boss GE-7 Equalizer
Boss DD-3 Digital Delay
Boss DD-3 Digital Delay
Boss GE-7 Equalizer
Line 6 Verbzilla
Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail

The green and blue colors above are my guesses at what the 2 loops of the LS-2 are.
Also judging by the GE-7 settings, they are just used as Boost pedals.

On a related note, Rhydian Dafydd's (Bass) Pedal board looks like this:

Electro-Harmonix micro POG
Fulltone Bass Drive
MRX DI+
Danelectro Fab Chorus
Boss GEB-7 Bass EQ
Boss DD-3
Boss RV-5 Reverb
Boss NS-2 Noise Supressor

He uses a Boss VE20 for vocals
and a DigiTech Jamman though DI for playing samples.

I had the opportunity to ask Ritzy about her amps. This is what she replied to me.

In terms of the modelled sounds, she uses Amplitube quite often.
