Kevin Shields circa '92 or so
Check out this photo of Mr. Shields' rig from the Loveless tour! I had no idea that he used Roger Mayer pedals back in the day...

Nice! I'm going to attach the pic to this post for posterity in case that link breaks (which I think most Tumblr ones eventually do). Along with one a fellow on Harmony-Central scanned from a Feb '92 magazine (Kevin Shields pedals from loveless era tour)
So I'm glad you brought this up as I've been meaning to extract some of the information from mybloodyvalentine.net and post it on here. I actually exchanged some dialog with someone claiming to be a former tech/roadie for them from their last tour a long time ago on that site and he had rather useful information, which has since been backed up/proven with photos that have emerged since then. Right, so let's get to it: Kevin Shields - My Bloody Valentine (Circa '92) Note: For this I'm going mostly off the B&W photo because we can see more in it. Boss PQ-4 Parametric Equalizer (I think this is to the stage right of the mic in the B&W pic) Huge Amp Switcher/MIDI Rack Control Box? Dunlop Rotovibe ProCo Turbo Rat (between the Rotovibe and the GE-7 in the magazine pic, hard to see if it's there in the other pic) Boss GE-7 Equalizer Boss FT-2 Dynamic Filter (I believe that's what this is in both pictures, the FT-2 was the replacement for the TW-1 that we know he used in the Boss line, you can see the FT-2 on his current pedalboard as well. Also there appears to be tape over the Expression Jack Input, so people didn't plug this in incorrectly) Roger Mayer Mongoose Fuzz (the original Mongoose was a black pedal opposed to the purple or sometimes pink color it is nowadays) Digitech PDS-8000 Echo+Plus 8 Second Delay/Looper Marshall Guv'nor Boss TW-1 Touch Wah (This might actually be a GE-7) Digitech WH-1 Whammy Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz (the originally Axis Fuzz was silver, not orange like you see it nowadays) Boss PN-2 Pan/Tremolo Boss PN-2 Pan/Tremolo Then you can see he has a rack in the back with 5 units in it: 1) ADA MP-1 2) Yamaha SPX90 or SPX900 3)? 4) Alesis Midiverb II 5)? Information from mybloodyvalentine.net: Here's two quotes from the fellow claiming to be his tech for 3 years and a friend, the information has proven to be rather legit: "For Loveless live shows he used - Digitec Whammy, Boss EH-2, Boss PQ-4, 2 x Boss GE-7, Boss T-Wah, Pro-Co Turbo Rat, Roger Mayer Axis & Mongoose, Marshall Guv'nor, Jim Dunlop Roto-Vibe, Boss Tremolo/Pan, Digitec PDS-8000, ADA Pre-amp, MidiVerb 2, SPX90 x 2 and 3 x JCM800's (only 2 amps were actually running) JCM's valved with EL34's and ECC83's (including phase split). - I may have missed out one or two pedals there....it has been a few years..!!! The clever part is what he adds to the internal wiring to the guitars and the reasoning behind using certain guitars for certain songs." and after I questioned him on the usage of the TW-1 and Rotovibe he said this: "I don't understand why you are questioning any of this set up...!!! I worked with and for MBV for almost 3 years, I am in contact with Kevin to this day (although there is no pint asking him what effects / amps he used 14 years ago, he can't remember what he had for breakfast that morning), so unfortunately I am the only one who knows 'what & how'....for live work anyway. But, just to appease YOU..... T-wah - Used for the entire length of 'I Only Said'...heh? Midiverb 2 - For the record, 70% of the reverse reverb used in the live set was generated from the Alesis and not the SPX90. If you have chance to use both units (in a Pepsi challenge kinda way you will understand, if however, you don't know how to use gear properly you will never 'get it'). Midiverb2 - Listen to 'Slow' both live and studio versions. Guitar>Midi2>ADA>Amp...........as simple as that. Rotovibe - I will be honest.......I have no idea where it was used or why it was even there.....a useless pedal." Later I read the Loveless 33 1/3rd Book and it stated that the Rotovibe was used for "Blown a Wish". Last edited by AcquiredTaste; 06.22.12 at 8:35 AM. |

That's nuts he has all those pedals...and he has to just keep all that in his head, or does he he have a cues sheet for which pedals work on which songs, plus settings...(head explodes).

I don't think he has cue sheets, but nowadays he has the names of songs written on stickers on the pedals. |

I just wanna point out how different the order of effects in those chains are, and even at that point how some pedals come and go. The Guv'nor is gone in one and the turbo rat in the other.
And as nice as it was of his tech to answer some questions, the dude seems like an asshole. Never liked his online attitude. I also still think Shields probably used a Shredmaster at some point. He seems to have used about everything on earth and it might have been in a come and go pedal collection. Look at how many pedals he tours with at this point.

FINALLY FOUND IT!
the source of all the confusion over kevin shields shredmaster use comes from an article in GUITAR PLAYER from May 1992. The sidebar clearly states shredmaster. It is funny cause everything else is in line with his rigs from that period.

Sure! The interview is on Mybloodyvalentine.net but it doesnt have the side bar where he say that. I had tossed my issue years ago but someone dropped off boxes of guitar magazines at the store and i found it in there along with a few other awesome issues from my youth.
But yeah, I will get my roommate to scan it and will post it here.
