Melt-Banana 2009 (pic links inside)

Hey all -

I'm new to the site / first post, etc.

I just managed to get some superb pics of Ichirou Agata's board (complete with knob settings). The pics are linked below.

Here's what he had:

BOSS Chromatic Tuner TU-2
BOSS Digital Delay DD-6
DigiTech Whammy
FullTone Full-Drive 2
Line6 FM4 Filter Modeler
BOSS Digital Pitch Shifter/Delay PS-2
I can't make out the exact name of the little black & blue one in the bottom left corner (next to the PS-2), but I think that's just a bypass/switch box. It was running to the amp. Someone here can surely ID it.

Agata played with the knobs on the BOSS PS-2 during the show, but the knobs on the other pedals stayed the same throughout. The first pic shows the PS-2's settings prior to the show; in the second pic (where his foot is on the Whammy pedal), you can see that the position of the PS-2's "Mode" knob has changed.

You can see him playing the SG Custom in a couple of shots -- this is the only guitar he used; in another you can see the Marshall amp, belonged to the club (the opening bands used the same amp rig). He had a digital camera with him, and used a photo of the amp head's settings to adjust the knobs prior to the performance. There's a pedal to the left of his board (a Marshall board for the amp); it also belonged to the club (it had a sticker with the venue's name ("Club FF,," on it).

They did two shows in two nights in South Korea (these pics come from the second night's performance); his board was the same both nights. Maybe he uses a bigger board when they tour America/UK, but I can guarantee that that's all he used here.

The big box to the left of the pedal board (the bright green/yellow thing) was just a step-up/down transformer/voltage converter. Korea runs at 220v, with EU-style plugs. Agata plugged a Japanese-style 100v non-polarized power pack into it. This box also belonged to the club; you can see a sticker with the venue's logo on it in one of the pics.

In a couple of the pics you can see a paper to the right of Agata's board; it's in Kanji, which I cannot read. I think it just shows his effects settings, though. The set list was in front of Yasuko, written in English.

As for Rika Chang (bass player): The only pedals she had were a BOSS Chromatic Tuner TU-2, and an MXR D.I. (Bass>Tuner>D.I.>amp).

As with Agata, I think that the Ampeg cabinet she was using belonged to the venue (I couldn't make out the head).

Yasuko also occasionally played with this electronic percussion/sequencer(?) unit you can see in a couple of the pics, covered in grey fur. I couldn't quite make it out, but one of you may be able to ID it from the buttons/back panel.

Melt-Banana, both nights.

All of their songs were full-length (relatively speaking, of course).

I hauled equipment for Melt-Banana in SD.

The Ampeg amp and cab is Rika's.

The heads Agata-san I think aren't his, he only carries a Sunn Beta Lead head.

Excellent post! I really do think this is all of the gear Agata uses, it's easier to make weird noises than people think. Like everything else musical, it's all in the imagination.

Also-- the bassist has a cute butt.

I saw his pedalboard many times this year, this isn't all the pedals he uses.

it's
http://i25.tinypic.com/2i6ngqr.jpg this
plus another PS-2 Pitch Shifter
another DD-6 Digital Delay
Boss RC-20 Loop Station
Boss SC-20 Slicer
Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb
Lightfoot Labs Goatkeeper
Zvex Vexter Fuzz Factory
Some red Fulltone distortion I don't recognize
He sometimes has a Bass Crybaby Wah, or a Fulltone Clyde Wah
and some A/B boxes

You can see them here

Also, OP, did you get any clear shots of the setlists? I would really like to know what Agata-san can play with only those pedals.

I did try and get some footage with a cheap camcorder.
Most of it turned out to be unwatchable, but the set list is legible for a few frames.

http://i50.tinypic.com/23rvc0p.jpg
http://i48.tinypic.com/292xlbk.jpg

He only writes one word titles on his set lists, so below you'll see what he wrote (in all caps) and what song I thought it was (in parentheses).

* SPATHIC (Spathic!!)

* RAG (Rragg)

* SPIDER (Spider Snipe)

* BOKE (Heiwaboke Crisis)

* NEKO BRAIN (Cat Brain Land)

* SCOOP (Too Rough to Scoop (Find a Grain of Seed))

* PLASMA (Plasma Gate Quest)

* CALL (The Call of the Vague)

* PLASTER (Cracked Plaster Cast)

* DEVIL (Green Eyed Devil)

* SHIELD (A Shield for Your Eyes, a Beast in the Well on Your Hand)

* CHAIN (Chain-Shot to Have Some Fun)

* LOST (Lost Parts Stinging Me So Cold)

* DREAMER (A Dreamer Who Is Too Weak to Face Up To)

* MONKEY (Monkey Man)

* BLANK (Blank Page of the Blind)

Note that this is the set list for the first of two nights they played here.
I don't have any clear pics of the second night's set list.
Agata did, however, use the exact same scaled-down effects rig on both nights.

All of the pics in my original post are from the second show.

Ha ha, you didn't have to bother, I am an expert at reading and translating Melt-Banana setlists.

Thank you very much bro.
