And yes, how DOES one achieve that pick scrape sound in Soma? It's always been a mystery to me.

the sound reminds me of a seekwah or a Moog MurF... weird.

does anyoen have any news on the footage shot of the last concert ever? as far as i know, the full show was shot (something liek 3 and a half hours or something) but hasnt been released on a dvd or video.

anyone know if they have any plans to release it? dam the pumpkins hould just get back together and stop messing about with their side projects (well zwan were ok but sucked live, d'arcy's band are just terrible and james is with perfect circle who sucked when i last saw them)

I think I know which bit you mean, I think the first pickscrape bit is probably the eventide, then the second time he does it, when he sort of pickscrapes then mutes the strings, sounds like a sequenced wah (like a moog murf or something) with some delay

It is probably an Eventide efect, but I have gotten similar tones by tweaking phaser filters or flanges into a delay. The effect is similar to the Line 6 Bubble Echo setting in all their POD/DL4 stuff. If I remember correctly the Bubble Echo is based on a combo of a filter and delay.

There are a few reprinted columns Corgan did for Guitar World in the tablature book for MCIS and in one of those he mentioned the 'bubbly spaceship noise' a minute into the song was indeed "a patch on an Eventide harmonizer". The notes that went with the Siamese Dream tabs describe a whole load of rackmounts he used on tour which included an H-3000.

Apparently the droney violin-like noises were made up of "fourteen tracks of E-bowed acoustic guitar" mixed and EQ-ed down. Mental! 0_o

Wow. Digging up a six year old thread and continuing the conversation without skipping a beat.

That is a great DVD. And I am definately not the biggest Pumpkins fan, but I do like them. I always find them interesting because they are such a gear heavy band that creates interesting tones and wild effects.

In those same articles you mentioned Billy also said that the EBow section in "Soma" he used the Eventide for live (the backwards sound already mentioned). That had about a 500ms delay before sounding backwards. For more of this type of effect check out Adrian Belew's work (King Crimson, solo, a couple of Porcupine Tree tracks, etc). He uses the backwards effect all the time, both the real way (tape flipped around in the studio) and simulated (RPS10, his Johnson amps, the Jimi Hendrix Experiance pedal). I think Billy was using the Line 6 M13 with the Reverse Echo model from the DL4 on the 20th Ann. tour. I didn't see the Eventide in any of his rigs since the Machina tour, and the H3000 has been gone since the end of the Mellon Collie tour. He upgraded on Adore to the newer model, and then again to the Orville on Machina. His Zeitgeist rig mainly made a couple of DLS pedals rackmounted for various chorus/rotary speaker effects, and the Toadworks Phantasm for a few Phaser things. He added the M13 somewhere along the way, and used KORG SDD2000 delays, as he has on and off since Siamese Dream. Note this is not the popular Edge-used SDD3000, rather the earlier model that actually had MIDI. I have 2 of these, and as soon as you hear them you can tell how much he has used this Mod Delay over the years. (Along with Roland Space Echos as well, a key example of the Space Echo is "Hummer")

However to simulate the sounds I would start with the Bubble Echo, Analog Delay w/Mod, Reverse, or MultiHead sounds on the Line 6. If you have other stuff, you can still get similar stuff without an Eventide, but it is easy to find pics of his rig for SD or MCIS tours if you want the real thing. Like I said, I have gotten good results from other stuff, and it should be noted that Billy rarely uses the same sound for anything from tour to tour, even a featured effect like this.

yeauh, i'm pretty sure it's an old "Laser-Tag" ray gun. i used a star wars stormtrooper rifle once to much the same effect.

Man! In a post above, from 2005! TWO THOUSAND AND FREAKING FIVE, someone mentioned that the "last" Metro show would come out in '06 or '07.. um.. where is it? Every time I watch AOTN on the greatest hits DVD I pine for that show to be released.

There's a moment, I think it's in the long, extended build-up, in the middle of the tune, where the shot is just on James, with the lights and crowd going INSANE in the background, and his facial expression is just "holy crap, this is rock". That's the feeling I try to find at every show.. haha.

I want my DVD.
