specific minus the bear tone...
that tone on mtb's new cd during track 4 "the fix". the solo line that starts around 2:30 into it has a tone I have not heard anywhere. its REALLLLY gainy but only slighty distorted and it sounds like its eq'ed so that the high-mids are cranked but i'm sure there is more to this tone.
any ideas? |

Dude, Dave Knudson is god. I've done extensive research on his rig and I stood in front of him while he played that solo the last time I saw MTB. He plays everything on a neck pickup (has to be a humbucker, no exceptions. It also has to be a COVERED neck pickup.) and the secret to his tone is TONS of very very transparent compression. He used an Ibanes TS-9 Tubescreamer, a Boss CS-3 and a FMR Really Nice Compressor on that. The FMR is on ALL the time. That's how he can do those tapping lines so cleanly, because he has such a brick-wall dynamic range. It's all the same volume throughout the song, and when he gets to the solo, he uses the CS-3 to push his amp a little bit with the TS-9. The CS-3's level is boosted fairly high and the TS-9's level is high too, with the drive being low. Then there is compression added post production too. His eq on a Fender Twin Reverb Reissue (what Dave uses), would be:
Volume: 5-6 Treble: 8 Mids: 4-6 Bass: 6-8 Reverb: Off You have to play this solo f*cking loud to get the tone. Learn that solo note for note. Focus on the right ear (when listening w/ headphones), then do the left ear. Soon youy will be able to play both parts. They take practice, but it's a killer solo and I use that solo for my soundchecks at every gig I play. It makes people realize you can play, and it turns heads, guaranteed. Travis' promise.

there was no twin when i saw them. he was using a lower wattage badcat. the singer was using the twin. no tubescreamer either.
i must also add, the tone was spot on.

Here's some evidence: Tubscreamer is right on the right side of Dave's pedalboard. There is no compressor on his board. So I'm guessing on the recording the compression was added post production. http://www.minusthebear.com/data/ima...s/z9towdtv.jpg That's during the Menos El Oso sessions. And here's a picture of the pedal board of the tour I saw them on. These Arms Are Snakes opened: http://www.flickr.com/photos/32074217@N00/46132297/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/32074217@N00/46132570/ That's from 'the game needed me'. He uses the DL-4 as samplers. Also, that pedalboard used to belong to Pearl Jam. They keyboard player/programer worked some tech sessiona with pearl jam when they were recording. The Tubescreamer was used previously I guess. Was Jake using a tubscreamer? I know he's always been a fan of those. For amps though, I know Dave was using a Reissue Twin when I saw them. I was standing right in front of it and it was unbelievebly loud. Jake was using an Original Blackface Twin and it crapped out on him, so he had to play through his Silverface Twin. The stage volume of that band was SO loud. Way fun to watch though.

i'm not arguing. all i was saying was that when they played live here a few weeks ago he was using a badcat, i didn't see a tubescreamer [but i know how much they both have used them] i saw everything else including the 4 dl-4's, the whammy, he was also using a dd-20, the compressor on top of his badcat [that's how i knew he was using the badcat for sure], and the tone for the solo was very close to the recorded sound.
in short. he can get that sound on different gear. and actually, i thought his tone was better on that stuff live. they were very loud, but a good loud. my ears rang for two days afterward.

There is no argument. I'm just trying to do a sort of 'deductive reasoning' on what he might have used on that solo. Just trying to find evidence of my theories from what I know about his gear.
I'm sure if you were playing through a Bad Cat, no matter what you use for pedals, your tone is going to be excellent. Maybe Dave just started to downsize and realized just how insanely large his board was, including all of the Line 6's. Those pedals sure do suck for reliability. I hope I can see that band again. They were fun. Songs about drinking and girls; can't be bad. ![]() Was it a 2 X 12" combo or was it a single 12"? Knowing Fonzo, it was probably F*CKING loud whatever it was.
