Lightbulb Rock 'n' Roll in Outer Space

Were you aware of the fact that electric guitars don't need the earth's atmosphere to give a sound as the output signal only relies on electromagnetism? And it's even better: in outer space you should benefit from increased sustain because no air is around to dampen the vibrations.

Too bad I'm a little clumsy in my space suit;-)

Unfortunately sound is merely air molecules moving as far as I know so I don't think you'll hear a whole lot. Same reason you shouldn't hear an explosion or a space ship passing by though even some programs on National Geograhpic seem to forget that. Or something.

You're right. The last bit from speaker to ear won't work but everything else should perfectly do.

However, you could route the electric guitar's signal to a hearing aid that fits over the ear and puts vibrations against the bone directly behind the ear. That's where all the good frequencies are anyway.

I see we're perfectly ready for the future, well apart from that clumsy space suit issue;-)

Who needs to hear it? If you run enough 100 watt heads and 4x12 cabs you'll feel it.

Now that's space rock.

Oh, and can't we get those suits where it's just a unitard with a fishbowl on your head? Wait - scratch that. No one should wear a unitard! Fishbowls are still cool though.

You'd have to sit on the speaker otherwise again the air is missing to transmit the sonic wave.

I like these kinds of discussion. It's exactly what science-fiction means to me. Start with a strange idea and figure out what happens if you aply the laws of physics to it. Sadly the essence of today's sci-fi films is who does the best special FX

Can't I have a wooden floor with a persian rug and stand on it with no shoes and feel the power of several stacks at once through my feet like a true outer space hippy rocker???

I suppose without gravity you'd have to nail your stack(s) to the stage properly but it should definitly work.

Bingo!
Did you ever see the episode of Mythbusters where they built a suspension bridge out of gaffa? Hilarious!
