Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

What do you guys think of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Madonna was inducted this year while bands like Rush and Deep Purple have yet to get in. I am not arguing whether or not Madaonna should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I am just saying that many awesome rock bands have yet to get into the ROCK & Roll Hall of Fame, yet they induct pop stars first. I think that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame had more crediblility five to ten years ago, and they can regain their crediblilty by puting bands like Deep Purple and Rush in.

Oh You're not the only one who thinks the HOF has been a farce for ten or more years.

yea, HOF doesn't mean much if Madonna gets in but Rush doesn't. hell the fact they even let her or Justin Timberlake in the building makes me think "what the hell?"

Rush not getting in is a big point of contention for me. in terms of number of gold and platinum records they're behind only The Beatles, The Stones, and Kiss. their impact is undeniable. still, they've always kind of operated on their own outside the mainstream music industry, so i don't think the HOF's interesting in voting them in and Rush doesn't seem interested in receiving the award.

it's like, remember that MTV Icon show? they did one for Janet Jackson, Metallica, Aerosmith, and i think one for The Cure over in England. they get a bunch of the current bands (regardless of their genre or influence) and have them pay "tributes" to the artist. Rush wouldn't even bother with that. they'd just put on a huge concert for the fans and play all the classics themselves. so what's the point?

I saw Rush live and they were great. They play great music and are very talented. In my mind, Rush are one of if not the most talented all around band. It was cool that the ROF did put the Ventures in. I love surf music and that was very cool to see. But come on Justin Timberlake! Billy Joel was pretty funny, too but Justin Timberlake! He has nothing to do rock music at all. I've almost given up on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

slightly off-topic, but having Timberlake present at the HOF is like having Tool and Metallica play at Bonnaroo (which they are lined up to do btw).

oh, the times they are a-changin'...

Was it last year that a Hip-Hop group got inducted? Is the ROF hurting so much for ratings that they are inducting Hip-hop and pop stars? I guess so.

it was Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. and wishing no offense to the man, under what definition of rock does he fit under? sometimes it seems what the Hall of Fame defines as "rock" is rather broad.

they've inducted several R&B groups (Temptations, Four Tops, Supremes) but i don't really have a problem with that (though Diana Ross...shudder). but Michael Jackson? isn't he the King of Pop, not the King of Rock?

the only thing that gets me is that music in today's world (and im including the media) is full of sell-outs. it's all about money, ratings, fame, attention, etc etc. all this comes BEFORE music, and that pisses me off. i don't know, it's all a big glamour thing now. i didn't even watch the stupid thing because i know how things are getting anymore. its all a big game that these celebs play just to get on TV once again. and seriously, the media is so clique-y.

I saw Iggy and the Stooges cover some Madonna tunes at the recent ceremony. That was really really weird, but also pretty cool. Seeing Iggy and Madonna pose together for the photographers was kinda funny.

EDIT: By the way, music and the media have been like that since the birth of Rock music. If you look back at old pop charts, it's not like you're going to find innovators like Zeppelin or Hendrix consistently at the top. There's always been crap on the airwaves. Always.

yea, alright, i'll agree with that. hendrix used to be upset about people not diggin his personal tastes. he was about to embark on a journey into the jazz realm at the same time he died. in fact, he started to with some band, crap what was their name....argh, i think it was Sky Church, but i can't remember. someone inform me if possible. Michael Jeffery shot it down because jazz records wouldn't sell. but yea, here's an example of an artist wanting to be creative and pursue his own tastes and likings, but getting shot down because "it won't sell". Prince was another example, to jump ahead to the 80s. I also know that Procol Harum was literally rebelling against the pop movement in the 60s. so ok, its true that this always existed. however, my point still stands. its only the popular artists who we ever see on TV. and why are they popular? because they conformed to the ever-demanding tasteless public.

I guess the thing that makes me sad about the ROF is it used to honor some bands that did not get credit in their time. LIke many have said, the airwaves have always been bad, but at least many of the truly talented bands got in to the ROF, and it was mainly rock bands. It was very cool to see the Ventures inducted. I love surf music, but last year Van Halen was the only good band to get inducted if I remember correctly (I may have forgotten a good band and if I did I'm sorry and don't freak on me )

On a semi-positive note, Joan Jett looked fookin' sexy as all hell. Semi-positive because it's definitely chemicals.

Well, I wouldn't vote for either of the bands you mentioned but I think it's a crime that guys like Link Wray and Gene Vincent have been omitted.
