i heard a band and the bass player sounded like his amp was about to blow the **** up... i dont think he was using a pedal unless he had something in his rack...

my bassist wants this sound.

how can i help him find it?

well, put a booster or EQ in front of the amp to get that sound? I know that there's an swedish pedal-modder that has an "ampeg-mod" he does to some boss pedal... It just makes you sound like an ampeg bass-amp cranked to max... Find out if any on this board can do something similar

I build a pedal that is the preamp of an Ampeg SB-12; I replaced the tubes with FETs and biased them at the exact point where the "magic" happens. With this pedal you can get a clean boost, soft OD but also mayhem.

I love that pedal

Otherwise I can advise on some decent fuzz pedals. I love my modded Big Muff for bass or, as being my favourite, a Big Cheese (slightly modded) on bass.

tube amp turned up really loud, with a rat or a bid muff in front. that's a classic overdriven bass sound.

the woolly mammoth sounds great, but side by side with either the rat or big muff, the sound really doesn't justify the difference in price... to me that is. Check out all of them... try the buddah phat bass while you're at it... i love mine... it's an svt in a box that you can push even harder.

My old guitarist now plays bass and uses a TurboRAT.

With some EQing they can sound very nice but I'd go with Berarduur's idea. In fact... always go with Berarduur's ideas!

I now also offer a "more gain" switch; that unit can get pretty nasty

yo bro.

f*** pedals

i run direct into a 1971 Ampeg V4 guitar head.

crank the mids.

its the fuzziest bass tone you can find

also, for less fuzz and more gain, i'd reccomend plugging straight into a 65 fender bassman (orignal blackface)

luckily, these two great vintage amps can still be found easily under $500.

another secret for huge bass tone is TO STAY THE F*** AWAY FROM 10 INCH F***ING SPEAKERS.

2x15 bro.

all the way.

do it real big

+1

but seriously, even if you have that amp, a Distorion + will blast it into a new and better place.
