BareKnuckle Pickups! Here to stay?

Hey guys.
I'm curious to get your opinion on Bareknuckle Pickups.

I work in a music store, and I have noticed that gear has a tendency to go in and out of style.
I remember about a year and a half ago, Serymour Duncan pickups released an active humbucker called the "Blackout", and everyone I knew was comming down to the shop to have these Blackouts installed in their guitar, and now it seems as though they have died down, which isin't to say no one uses them anymore, they just seem not as "hot" as they once were.
I know that gear (like clothes, music etc...) has a tendency to be very popular for certain periods of time.

Anyways, I'm noticing something simular happening with these Bareknuckle pickups. Everyone I speak to is having them put in their axes.

What say you guys?
Are bareknuckles here to stay? Or just a passing fad...

pretty sure they've been around for a good while now; i wouldn't call them 'new'. They have a good rep as far as I know. haven't had the opportunity to try any of their stuff, but I've only heard positive things about their pickups

People always think new (or better) gear will make them play better. And that can be true at times. It can get you past a plateau, whatever. But....... I know this guy that seems to buy a new amp (The last one was a Rivera Chubster, he's a real cork sniffer.) once a month and a different guitar every two .....and who knows how many pedal boards and controllers, etc. The simple truth is that the guy just isn't that good and all of the gear and money in the world will not make him any better. Players are always looking for that magic bullet that will make them better. The magic bullet is usually what is in vogue at the moment. They don't realize that the magic bullet is talent, inspiration, style, creativity, chops, and practice.
fullmetalfunk likes this.

They're not new at all, but they are becoming better known. I think the hype is more or less justified. I have a few sets, and they're my favorite pickups for most things I've tried them for. It's probably not worth the cost here in the States to put them into every guitar, but I'd get them for some of my nicer guitars.

Had a set for about 5 years and love them. They're here to stay.

I know this much. Matt Bellamy uses them and has since Origin Of Symmetry if I'm not mistaken. If they're good enough for him then I say they're here to stay. Have you HEARD his Absolution tour tone?

And your drug of choice, of course.

Not because drugs make you play better, but because they make you think you are playing better and/or take your mind off thinking you suck. Been playing sober for years now and I always remember I suck. Damn.

Selling BOSS FW-3. I live in Brazil, mind you, so prepare yourself for $30-ish for shipping and waiting. Local pickup available, along with beautiful beaches and cheap bitches.

Its funny, because I always asociated them being a metal player's pickup.
And I was really surprised to learn that Matt from Muse was using them, and a friend of mine told me that Gary Moore had used them as well.
At the end of the day, if they are good, then it dosen't matter if they are "in" at the moment. Happy to hear that most of the users on here are satisfied with them.

When discussing trends, it just seems that people seem to follow certain things.
Every young guitarist I talk to these days tells me they have a 7 or 8 string guitar equipped with bareknuckles, running through a Fractal AXE FX Ultra....

Ask them where they make that kind of money for all this! That right there is a trend..... All the rage! Every metal kid wants an 8 string, and listens to Animals as Leaders and Mushuggah, just like Dragonforce with guitar hero years ago.....

I applaud the guys that instead of having the low G on an 8 string, strings it with a high A, but I guess when there's no bass players around, you gotta have that lower string......

I have basically that kind of rig, but I've always been inclined toward that sort of setup. When I heard that they made guitars with 7 strings, I instantly fell in love with the idea before I even knew of any specific guitarists who used them. I also happen to find the necks on 7- and 8-string guitars and 6-string basses to be more comfortable. I've always been into modeling gear because of the flexibility and consistency, and the Axe-FX lets me tweak every detail to my heart's content (my tweak : play ratio is probably a little too high). I love Meshuggah and Animals as Leaders, but I don't endeavor to sound like them, and the word "djent" makes my eye twitch a little.

Oh, and the lowest string on an 8 tuned standard is an F#.

No shots against you, really cool you found your niche, I listen to Mushuggah and Animals as Leaders, along with the Tony Danza Tap Dancing Extravaganza, and The Deftones as well. Just everyone was saying Axe FX as if it's a household name like Lamb of God... Just I pay attention to the guy that makes his gear work for him, and I haven't been seeing much of that of late with 8 string players, no offense to any of them.

^This depends on your idol, the 8 string design was patented in 1966... Only reason I can think of this answer is the manufacturer sent it out in this tuning, but there really is no "standard" tuning for 8 strings, as they very in application.

I didn't take anything personally, so no worries there. I think 8-strings are still going through the process 7-strings went through where most people sound similar until people learn to better get what they want from them. Line 6 and Fractal happen to be the more popular gear choices currently since they can handle the extended range better than most tube amps.

As for the tuning, the same can be said of 7-strings. The first 7-strings were tuned to drop A, but standard tuning is considered BEADGBE. Following the pattern another fourth down, 8-strings ship tuned F#BEADGBE. Of course, you can still tune however you want. I'm using Eb Ab Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb on my 8 at the moment.

When I was working at a BOOteeek store bareknuckles were in vogue with the people around there. This was 2007-8. A couple of the sets were really nice but pound for pound i found lollars just to be nicer sounding pickups. And a few of the suhr sets.

In the end, I think the antiquities by duncan are still overall the nicest pickups i have heard in years. At least the jaguar, jazzmaster and the vintage humbuckers.
