Fender Pawn Shop series...
Not sure if you guys have seen these, but Fender have just announced their new 'Pawn Shop' series. They look fantastic, and I'm arranging to try out the Mustang Special. Link here.

"only $999"
I can remember when the CIJ Competition Mustangs were only $549. I passed a LPB one with the matching headstock up for $400 on clearance when they discontinued them and I'm still kicking myself.

Toooooo shiny and expensive to be called "Pawn Shop"
![]() I would rather have a dirtier model at around $400. Without the crappy stickers you find on a lot of real pawn shop guitars though

I think they call them pawn shop guitars because they have features that you would probably find on modified guitars in a pawn shop. There are lots of those, especially in California. Lots of kids who gave up or got into drugs.
I bought my CIJ Mustang when they were so not cool (2005-ish) used for $700 at a music store. I had to tweak the crap to get it to rock, but it's mine now. You'll never see that at a pawn shop... *shakes fist* |

The Mustang version is the only one that perks my interest.

I saw these the other day too... Gotta say they look great. The Mustang looks mighty fine, so does the 51. Not sure about the hollow one but I can see why some people would dig it.
I say good on Fender for putting out some really interesting stuff that;s actually usable, not whacky-for-the-sake-of-it stuff but genuinely cool stuff.

my interest was killed when i saw that the mustang was a hard tail and not the traditional mustang bridge.

Binding on the f-hole looks sweet, they should do that to more of the thinlines. Interesting pickup wiring/switching.

Way too expensive forwahat they are . That said I heard rumours they were designed in the Japan factory and the more of Fender Japan's stuff that comes to market the better

This might be a silly question, but why do you think they're overpriced? The Mustang is 200 US cheaper than the classic series... Granted they're more than the standard MIM strats & teles but if they're as good some of the other higher end Mexican and Japanese Fenders it's probably not a bad deal.

also, i feel like we're getting bent out of shape discussing Fender's MSRP; that price is usually about 50% higher than actual cost in-store, at least in my experience. So... if these guitars are say, only $650-700, would that be more reasonable?
I don't need another guitar, and can't justify spending for one, but i'd look at these as a neat option. At least it feels like Fender is trying to be a little creative in terms of new release models. I may eat my words once they release the X, and Robot series, but until then... make mine Fender. |

not into humbuckers, but at least these are a billion times better than what has been coming out of the Gibson factory lately |

Saw the mustang special on sweetwater for $799. Still too high for me, but I have to say, I feel a bit of GAS bubbling up for that mustang. I like it. yep.
