floyd rose nut with standard strat trem
I'm wondering if there are any negative impacts to using a floyd rose locking nut without the locks. I looking to put a an Ibanez Wizard or Ibanez EX neck on a project, but I'm not putting a floyd rose trem on (so no bridge tuners), hence the need to not use the locks. Or, is there another alternative?
thanks |

Just get you some locking tuning keys if you want some additional tuning stability without resorting to putting a locking nut on the guitar. Putting a floyd nut on that guitar will require routing the fretboard and neck for the floyd nut and removing the existing nut as well, a job best suited to a skilled guitar tech or repairman to get it done right.(otherwise you are taking the chance of screwing up your neck) It's more of a hassle than it's worth, doing that offers no real benifits as well IMHO, so go with some good locking tuning keys if you are looking for more stable tuning.
Also, if you must put a new nut on there, get you a Fender style roller nut that comes on thier high end guitars, they have aftermarket replacements you could install but they too may require some routing, although it will not be as drastic as the floyd nut routing job. Hope it helps, good lucks dewd.

Yeah, a roller nut would be a better choice.
But as far as negative effect, I don't see anything wrong with using a Flyod nut.

Yea, stupid idea I know. Seems like roller nut is the right alternative. Are roller nuts wide enough to fill the space used by a floyd nut? That's really the issue I think, because floyd nuts are wider. I looked at a few on ebay and it looks like they are wide enough.

Wilkinson used to make a nut that was a direct replacement but they seem to be pretty damn rare these days.
