Jazz box for other styles?

Hey Geeks,

For some reason, I have recently been drawn to having GAS for a cheapo, no-frills jazz box. The problem is, I have never played one and I don't normally play much jazz, but I love the typical jazz guitar sound.

Question: Do any of you use a hollowbody jazz box for styles other than the normal jazz, blues, or rockabilly? I am looking to use it for ambient/shoegaze/stoner rock. I use lots of fuzz too.

I am the same way, love that jazz tone, but not much of a jazz player. DeArmond guitars were recently discontinued, but find a used one, their the nicest hollowbody guitars for a good price I know of...

you know what sad machines i had a jazzbox and that thing was a MONSTER.

it was a washburn j3 (or j5?) and if you take one of those hollow jazzboxes and plug it in to a cranked amp your gonna get sonic GOLD. shoegaze? you got it. hollowbodies will give you great feedback and break up perfectly. i plugged mine into a shredmaster and delay and then fender amp. ho-lee-****. imagine storm in heaven nick mccabe. thats the sound.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=lRiw4vZxSj4

that guy makes a jazzbox HOWL. so goodluck finding a good one. i chose the washburn because its good quality, cheap, and simple. the artcores are happy meal toys.

Yeah, I was thinking of trying to find a Dearmond.

Or something like the Washburn HB15 or the SX GG7. Both really simple and inexpensive. Most reviews say they are pretty darn good for the money.

Geordie Walker of Killing Joke is known for using a Gibson ES-295, and he don't play no jazz, baby.

HOW MUCH CAN YOU SPEND ON A JAZZ BOX ???

Don't think you can do better on a brand new full hollow than, ermmm, say, $99.00

http://cgi.ebay.com/Deluxe-Acoustic-...QQcmdZViewItem - needs a PU though !

$189.00 - chepest brand new w. PU that i know off :
http://www.rondomusic.com/gg7cusvs.html

$229.00 - my fav. cheapo :
http://www.rondomusic.com/product1243.html

$369.00 - diff take on the theme
http://www.rondomusic.com/as1000transblk.html

Just depends what type of money you are talking about !
You can always up-grade the PU's if you want too.

I replaced my Artcore's humbuckers with true S/C TV JONES HT-TV Tron models, and that full hollow sreeeeams now !

Damn that looks sweet! I've heard mixed things about the Artcores, though. But for those looks, it could play like a cardboard box and it would still be worth the money spent

I am leaning hard toward the SX GG7. It looks cool, save for the gold hardware. Hmmm...

The Douglas you mention is cool too.

I like the simplicity of the guitar !

And whenever you decide to change the PU, you only have to spend money on one !

But my personal fav. is the AS-1000. l have a soft spot for trans black (and blue) guitars !

What about the body thickness of the GG7, though (3 7/16" at edge)?? I'm afraid it will feel like playing a dreadnought acoustic.

Any advice?
