BTW, who's the best source for Rio Grande pickups? Not sure I want to deal with Songbird Music.
I recently found this place:

www.dontfretguitars.com but I have yet to check them out. They are listed as a Rio Grande distributor in Burlington. Kind of out of the way but I will check them out sometime soon.

The typical Fralin PAF is slightly overwound to add some mids and uses an alnico 4 magnet which lets the string vibrate a bit more then alnico 5. All in all, still a much tighter PU then the Seth Lover/AP2.

Tighter meaning better? more compressed?

Does the overwinding make it less clean? I want warmth and pure clarity.

And what's the difference between the seth & AP2? I know they're both vintage PAF style...and how about the 59 whilst we're at it?

Thanks dude

Tight meaning more attack. There's the constant search for balance between attack and sustain. Overwinding adds mids so it really depends where you start. What YOU are after is low output so that the warmth and clarity will follow.

The Seth Lover is a AP2 which is not wax potted. The Seth Lover will sound different depending on who is playing it and where and into what. The '59 (read above somewhere) is a the benchmark for all PAF clones.

Thanks for the tight-info...

So since it's slightly overwound, the Fralin's not as suited for me as the APII?

I called them up today and asked about the BBQ. Two words: Flake Eee!

I may have to go with Songbird after all. <swears copiously>

The Fralins will have more byte to them but still sound more accoustic/3D then most other PUs out there. If you want warm and clean the AP2 and at the price of Duncan's I doubt you will feel taken or guilty.

The website gave that feeling and especilly when I could not find a phone number anywhere except on 411. Thanks for checking it out.

Hey, I got you what seems to be the last pack of Eric Johnson GHS (medium=11) strings. Can't find them around here, Music123 was backordered, MF was backordered but I ordered anyway and they found 1 pack. So I hope you don't like them

Yeah, I'm talking to a lot of shops that don't have them in stock (and should). Hopefully that means that people really like them.

You know of course that it will now be my sworn duty to say they're brilliant even if I think they're crap.

http://www.andersonguitars.com/toneLibInfo.html

I only have played his H3 and H3+ (bridge).

IMO they are great for someone playing an amp that can be very middy. He says they don't sound harsh and to me that comes from the fact that most of his PUs have more mids then treble and bass. I could be wrong but I know that a PU that is mid scooped can sound harsh when matched with higher gain.

As for playing clean, these PUs go well with the old Boogie (non- Fender) fat clean tones. The extra output adds some sustain and the overall effect is a fat clean lead tone.

I'm looking to replace my SD Hot Rails in the bridge (3rd) position.

I play lefty on my american strat. How does that affect my choices?

Any experience with the Voodoo '60 or '57 HB or Gibson Mini-Humbucker (can this fit in a strat)? Very interested in it.

I'm using a clean channel on my amp (soon to be replaced though...) and running it through a Proco Rat (although looking to trade for a TS9). The HR (I'm not sure what the orientation or wiring is... sorry) really doesn't mesh well with any distortion pedals and seems to have kind of a muddy crunch as well. Is it true that I can use a true doublesize humbucker by just changing up my pickguard?

Gah! So confused! Basically, looking for a pickup that'll mesh well with effects, is pretty clean and nice, and maybe maybe could produce a slight bite.
