Tempting Casino 'project' on ebay....

Okay, I've always wanted a Casino....would I be crazy to take this on?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1

How much would a tech charge to fix something like this?

A lot!

I have a Yamaha 12 string acoustic electric that has a similar break but it's not completely off like that one. My estimate was around 350 so I can imagine that one would be even more. My guitar was about that much so I just retired it and threw it in the closet.

I don't know if it would be worth it, dude.

Geez. That IS a lot. Still, if I could get the guitar for like, $200, and the repair cost $400...I could have a Casino for $600.

The pickups and hardware alone must be worth something, since they are American-made...

AVOID THAT GUITAR LIKE THE PLAUGE!

one of my buddies had a les paul with the same break. he got it repaired. it worked ok but was hella hard to keep in tune. then it would break again every year or two and he would have to pay to have it fixed again.

i will NEVER purchase a guitar that the headstock has broken off of.

Looks like a pretty common Gibson break. There are a lot of people playing SGs and Les Pauls with that same repair on them. I've read here that when done correctly, the joint should be stronger than it originally was. It's all about the quality of repair. Someone should be able to shed more light on this though(Frinky?).

That is 100% correct. If wood is properly glued, the crack itself becomes much stronger than the surrounding wood - it might crack again right next to the existing crack if it were dropped again, but the old crack would stay solid. This coming from both my grandpa (50 or so years of experience with woodworking) and my high school shop teacher, who glued a piece of wood and busted it for us to see just to demonstrate the principle.

I think your willingness to buy this guitar should be proportional to how much faith you have in your luthier

Would it be easier or more difficult (ie cheaper or more expensive) to have a whole new neck fitted rather than the headstock repaired? Is that even possible?

I think if it were a bolt-on that would be true. But set necks are a different story....

obviously, that's why i asked a question about changing the neck.

maybe i didn't ask my question as clearly as i thought so I'll rephrase it:

Would it be more expensive to replace a set-neck than to repair a broken head stock?

Unfortunately I have never used one before, so if anybody can recommend someone in New York...?

As far the set neck vs. bolt-on question goes, I don't think that there's much of a demand for aftermarket Epiphone parts, the way there is for Fender. So I doubt that anyone sells Casino necks....but I'll check.

true, it might be hard to find one, now if only there was a Casino with an broken body and a perfect neck on e-bay...
