Who do you sound/play like?

I sort of had an idea to put this thread up as a place to post either the guitarists that you idolize OR the guitarists who you aspire to sound like (tone-wise). Choose up to 5 only.

I like tone more so I'm going with:
Jerry Cantrell
Edge (dig those dual delay licks)
Billy Corgan
Page Hamilton
East Bay Ray

I'm mostly 90's rock with a little 80's punk mixed in.

People have told me I'm along the Melvins and Clutch area. I'm not surprised, though. Love their tones.

I never really LOOKED to sound like either and still don't sound just like them. I just happen to run a very similar rig to what Buzz and the guys from Clutch use.

(Gibson LP with moderate output pickups through a bass heavy classic Marshall-esque amp with a Pro Co Rat)

The Edge

Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers)

Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth)

Johnny Greenwood

Other than that, I would like to say some post-rock guitarist, but honestly, one doesn't stick out in my mind. I also couldn't decide between Mike Campbell and electric Bob Dylan for a while...

I'd say my own personal style is a lot of Edge, with a slightly meatier backbone, and a some pepperings of experimental sounds/noise and a lot of post-rock soundscape stuff as well...I just hope it doesn't come off like a toned down version of any of it haha.

I aim to sound like Adam Jones (Tool) and have been told that I make a fairly good emulation. I also make an attempt to mimic Tom Morello's riffing, but not much of the odd noises he can get.

Lately I've been moving away from neat riffs and rhythm lines and been thinking more of chords and melodies. Usually I'm aiming for a Jerry Cantrell kind of feeling, with big chords and riffs based off them.

So far, I just sound like Adam Jones.

Then swab the inside of the pedal send it to the lab for testing in a week or two they'll be able to tell you.

If you find a tab of acid in there take it.
The further back you trip the older it is. If its a bad trip then you know its from the 80's.

I don't even know,

I like Frank Black and Syd Barrett.
And Guided by Voices.
And the Ventures.
And GYBE!

Lately I've been learning Dinosaur Jr. and At the Drive-In songs...

I kind of just sound like me. I mean, the guitar just plays itself, you know? Booze helps.

i'd say the biggest influences that i've ripped off into my guitar playing to the point where it's become some of my phrasing and how i put stuff together...

guided by voices, the sprout years and the gillard years

pavement, stephen malkmus makes me want to play sloppier than whas good for me.

modest mouse / pixies / built to spill.

and more recently rob crowe from pinback (and every other band he is in or has been in.)

and David Coupe i should send you my GBV xmas song i wrote a few years back. i think you would like it.

Neil Young (big, choppy right-hand rhythms, messy solos)
Greg Ginn (lotsa power chords and dissonant solos)
Joey Santiago (I do that bending trick WAY WAY WAY too much)
J Mascis (melodic solos)
Bob Mould (Tone, use of open strings and distortion)
Sonic Youth (love of noise)

I play through too many different setups in different contexts to have a distinctive tone of my own, though. I usually try to get a high-gain, slightly fuzzy tone. And hardly any pedals.

i hear The Edge sometimes but i think its only because i use stereo delays and my singer looks like Bono in the right light.

my playing was primarily influenced by johnny marr as i was coming of age
