55 different options?!

Before you flame me, let me preface this with a reminder that the word GEEK is in the URL.

So a buddy of mine was lookin at my rig and asked me if I was aware of all the different overdriven / distorted possibilities my rig has. I told him I wasn’t sure but I assume quit a few.

We started doin some math and realized there are 55 different “distorted tones my rig is capable of. I didn’t include EQ’ing any of these cuz I always leave my EQ on.

We used the following variables
-The Mark IV amp has three channels: Rhy 1 (clean), Rhy 2 (dirty), and Lead (scream)
-I have two TS-9’s in my rig set for clean boost(slight distortion) and clean overdriven boost(very smooth but obviously distorted)
-My guitar has a three way pickup selector and with a coil tapped Duncan SH-1 ’59 in the neck so I can go from a Humbucker to a single coil. Then there’s a SH-4 JB in the bridge.

So considering the 11 different “base combinations listed below, multiplied by the 3 bucker pickup positions gave us 33. we then multiplied the 22 additional positions when switching to the single coil position (obviously the single coil pickup doesn’t matter when playing in the bridge position) by 11. add 33 and 22 together and that would equal 55 different tones correct?

Rhy 1 (Clean)
Rhy 1+ TS-9 (1)
Rhy 1+ TS-9 (2)
Rhy 1+ TS-9 (1) + TS-9 (2)

Rhy 2
Rhy 2 + TS-9 (1)
Rhy 2 + TS-9 (2)
Rhy 2 + TS-9 (1) + TS-9 (2)

Lead
Lead + TS-9 (1)
Lead + TS-9 (2)
Lead + TS-9 (1) + TS-9 (2)

That’s just crazy, I had no idea.

So I wonder how many of these the listeners ear would actually be able to pick up?

Why don't you go ahead and post clips for all 55 different options.

teleman is on a distinguished road
compound that by the range of the volume and gain knobs on all the devices and there's a lot more than 55

That might be a little much. Forget volume because neither 1 or 10 are VIABLE options... But gain and tone knobs are. You've got what three knobs on TS9...we'll drop the volumes assuming you adjust them so that you don't have a drop when they cut in. Probably a gain knob on each channel of the amp. Thats 6 extra options right there. Assuming they're all on a scale of 1-10. That leaves you with 3300 options...wait. no. That math gets too complicated cuz you wouldn't have options when the ts9's are off. poop.

Rhy 1, gain 1, ts9 gain 1, tone 1, ts9 2 off
Rhy 1, gain 1, ts9 gain 1, tone 2, ts9 2 off
Rhy 1, gain 1, ts9 gain 1, tone 3, ts9 2 off
Rhy 1, gain 1, ts9 gain 1, tone 4, ts9 2 off
Rhy 1, gain 1, ts9 gain 1, tone 5, ts9 2 off
Rhy 1, gain 1, ts9 gain 1, tone 6, ts9 2 off
Rhy 1, gain 1, ts9 gain 1, tone 7, ts9 2 off
Rhy 1, gain 1, ts9 gain 1, tone 8, ts9 2 off
Rhy 1, gain 1, ts9 gain 1, tone 9, ts9 2 off
Rhy 1, gain 1, ts9 gain 1, tone 10, ts9 2 off
Rhy 1 gain 1, ts9 gain 2, tone 1-10 ts9 2 off
Rhy 1 gain 1, ts9 gain 3, tone 1-10 ts9 2 off
Rhy 1 gain 1, ts9 gain 4, tone 1-10 ts9 2 off
Rhy 1 gain 1, ts9 gain 5, tone 1-10 ts9 2 off
Rhy 1 gain 1, ts9 gain 6, tone 1-10 ts9 2 off
Rhy 1 gain 1, ts9 gain 7, tone 1-10 ts9 2 off
rhy 1 gain 2-10, ts9 gain 1-10 tone 1-10 ts9 2 off
etc

Each channel represents 300 different options this way. With 1 TS9!! Adding another would add....I wanna say you multiply your 300 current options times 300 more when ts9 1 is off and 2 is on. plus a gajillion more when they're both on. I'm not smart enough for this.

that could get pretty crazy although im not sure if you'll be able to tell the difference between gain on 2 and gain on 3

On the fly your maths is right.

The sum is:

(number of amp modes x available pedal tones) adjusted x number of pickup positions available

So ((4 x 3) - 1 to get rid of the clean)x (bH + bHnH + nH + bHnT + nT) = 55

Would be 60 for fully clean position as you know.

Lots there. I only use about 4 or 5 total with 2 amps and 1 OD!
