Metalcore v. NWOBHM
Would you say the Metalcore stuff that's cool right now (Unearth, Atreyu, God Forbid, As I Lay Dying) comprises a new school comparable to the NWOBHM? You have to admit that it's not as dumb as hair metal or the white trash stuff that was cool in 1998 because it calls for developed chops. The thing that holds it back from being a lasting movement is that it has that singsong death metal aesthetic a little bit; you always go back to hitting one note, then cramming "holes of silence" in there and letting loose with a "WOAIA WHOAI OA AAWI" vocal. NWOBHM had its cartoonish moments, though.

I'm gonna have to say metalcore, given that I listen to much more metalcore than NWOBHM.
However, when I say metalcore, I'm not talking about Atreyu, Unearth, etc. I'm talking about Reflux, Crisis, Kylesa, Between the Buried and Me, The Red Death, Monarch, and stuff like that. Quote:

I prefer NWOBHM, because I can't stand Metalcore vocals. I rather enjoy the bits when there's no totally unintelligible roaring, but not enough to endure the screaming parts.

NWOBHM = new wave of british heavy metal and yes i do agree that the metalcore scene sounds more influenced from the NWOBHM movement and the other early 80s bands that were influenced from them (early metallica and the sort). notice that guitar solos are coming back in style again. it looks like that people are going back to their roots of music that they listened to as a kid growing up. but have you guys noticed how more so recently that kids who have only started getting into music now a days neglect the older bands? my drummer actually believes that atreyu and other newer modern bands would be around today (and sound the same) without those bands from the NWOBHM or the bands that were influenced by it. he also said that recording from a POD 2.0 sounded WAY BETTER than micing my mesa rig (which didn't and i won the argument hands down )but it's this kind of igorance that burns my biscuits. neglect of the original bands that were there way before they were born and changed how music was played and the attitude that was brought along with it. that's why i believe that bands now a days sounds so much like eachother. some people have only known music for so long (since it's become a trend to love music now more than ever) that all they know are bands from like the mid 90s to the present. honestly, nothing has changed in the music industry. there haven't been any exciting bands that have come out recently. nothing where you can listen to something and say "what is this?? who is this band? this is so different than what i've been listening to! i have to buy this cause it's so good." the last most recent band to do that for me was pantera. also i believe that this could have lead to the large number of people downloading music. cause honestly, bands today are very so-so and don't stand out enough from eachother that who'd want to pay for music that sounds like everything else, might not have much of replay value, has no melody, filled with false anger (cause it's cool to scream indecipherable lyrics out). atreyu is the only band recently that gave me a shock at what i was listening to. "what is this?? an actual GUITAR SOLO??? TAPPING??? HAMMER ONS AND PULL OFFS!!!??? IT'S ABOUT TIME!" i mean, i'm only 17 but i believe i know what good music is. it's about gettin drunk, satan lol, and kickin butt. not being all depressed and wanting to kill yourself and being a drug addicted downer. it's like at some point in the 90s, every guy who was in a band got dumped by their girlfriend at the exact same time and became this generation of depression. yeah... END OF RANT... +Mike+

Everyone is entitled to their opinions but I find it funny how it becomes trendy to not like certain guitars and decide that they are *****. Most people who post these opinions have never even played a real Kramer. It is also funny when people bitch about the bands of the 80s. It wasn't all Warrant and Poison back then guys. Besides, most of these big hair Kramer playing guys could play laps around the ***** Kurt Cobain lovin, pop-punk make up wearing poseurs of today. The 80s saw the pinnacle of players like EVH, Vai, Satch, John Sykes, Zakk Wylde, Marty Friedman, SRV and so many more. EVH played Kramers for a long time and recorded some of the most classic guitar music ever on Kramers. Mine played great and sounded great back in the day. What else were people supposed to play? Gibsons? Fenders? There is life outside of these two brands. I don't think that Gibson has been all that stellar for a long time anyway. Let's not start talking about their craftmanship and pricing policies. I will take the music and players of the 80s over %99 of the crap that is out today. EMO my @ss. People who can't play their instruments make me shudder. -JimmyJames |

Do me a favor, scroll down a little bit and download either Single File to Bliss or Above the Pyramid and Eye. Do you hear that? It's metalcore! And the guitarist (there's only one; he plays ALL those layers live using a Boomerang, a multi-amp setup and an A/B box) is better than you!

I think the reason I don't like metalcore is because it's cookie-cutter music. Intro, good riff, melody, first screaming vocal line, clean chorus, back to the next screaming verse, then again the clean chorus, pretty decent solo even though it's either a C scale or a pentatonic scale really fast, and then the clean chorus again and the heavy outro with double bass. Everyone plays the same thing. I like Killswitch Engage and God Forbid and maybe a few more, but that's about it. It's the "new" nu-metal. Nu metal had simplistic riffs and they whined too much about how they had a dysfunctional family. Now metalcore is just the opposite, with great riffing and good solos, but it's all the same. Nothing stands out.
NWOBHM gets my vote. |

I enjoy metal that combines elements of both movements.
