Eleven Rack
Hi guys and dolls,
It's been awhile... Anybody have any experience using the PT Eleven Rack? I know the vintage analog guy just asked about a modeling amp. I know it's not quite Axe FX, but I'm not sure I really want something that massive and expensive. |

Hey dude! Sure has been a while! I heard a few people recommend it at work, over the Line 6 POD stuff anyways; we looked into buying one, but one of the best bits is you get ProTools, and we already had Logic, so we went with the cheaper Sansamp PSA 1.0. 'Tis plenty customisable, certainly not on a level of the AxeFx, but it's all-analog which may appeal to you more, and it's amp emulations are great (as in, kicks my Sansamp Classic's arse)!

Drool. It's nice. I got a demo of it at Avid Day here at the local L&M. The integration with PT is stellar. It makes ramping stupid easy and even saves patch settings in the track meta-data. The core sounds I heard were great. The price is nice. I'd like one just for the PT interface.
And I'm an exceptionally happy AxeFx owner. It'd pair well with an 11R.

It seems decent enough from what I've heard. You should also look into the new Line 6 stuff. The POD HD boards seem to be in about the same bracket as far as quality, and they're cheaper.

I won't buy Line 6. I'm sure they make good gear, but I'm still mad about my DL-4 dying right before a gig, right after the waranty died. I won't go back.
The pairing with PT is what sells it for me (in my mind) as a Pro Tools fellow, and transitioning from less of a live mode to more of a studio mode it is very intriguing. I'll have to play it, yada yada, but It's the first time I've had GAS in a while. |

I typically prefer clean sounds and power amp distortion, how well does it emulate that? |

The Axe-FX is the best amp modeling unit currently on the market by a large margin, and it's also a studio grade effects unit. Whatever you're looking for, the Axe-FX will deliver. It's the only modeler I've tried that has convincing power amp emulation. I had always run my modelers with tube power amps, because it didn't sound quite right to me otherwise, but I'm running my Axe-FX with a Carvin DCM power amp, which is basically a flat response PA amp.

It seems as much, and that I'd be kicking myself if I didn't go with it over 11R...
However, what is better Ultra or Standard? Do I realy want to pay $500 more for Ultra? |

Do you have use for the extra features? The effects' quality is the same. The Ultra's effects and modeling don't sound a bit better than the Standard's. What the Ultra does have is a bit of extra power to allow more stuff in your patches, as well as a few extra effects, like a multi-band compressor.

Also, FYI I also don't really need high gain tones. The heaviset I would ever go would probably be the Marshall JCM-800. |

Some of the clips iaresee has posted of his Axe-Fx are amazing. Its usually the middle-gain tones that are hardest to model, but the Axe-Fx sounds like it nails those wonderful overdriven amp sounds.

I no longer own any tube amps. Here's increasing levels of gain gotten three different ways. In all three cases I just roll up my volume between iterations on the theme to bring in more gain. These were done over a year ago so lets see if I can remember the settings! Clip 1: SLO 100, so a hot amp, but set with the preamp gain around 6 out 10. Master volume is fairly low. So what you're getting here is it modelling preamp gain in to an output section that's got lots of headroom. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/870088/AxeFx/crunch1.mp3 Clip 2: Plexi, so lower gain amp, but with the master volume run wide open. This is preamp + power amp saturation. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/870088/AxeFx/crunch2.mp3 Clip 3: Black face twin reverb with a TS-808 in front of it. So super clean amp with the overdrive coming from the modeled pedal. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/870088/AxeFx/crunch3.mp3 I could go on for days and days about this box. It has turned me in to a very spoiled guitar player. I can call up an amazing array of tones now. The effects are outstanding too. I own a Standard. Sonically there's no difference between it and the Ultra. The Ultra just has an additional set of effects (vocoder, synth, multi-band compressor). If I could have afforded an Ultra I would have bought one. For the MB comp alone. The Ultra will also let your run a dual-amp/dual-cab patch *plus* lots of effects. The Standard's CPU gets pretty consumed by two amps and two cabs. You've got room left for some very light effects when you start running dual amp setups. And believe me: you haven't lived until you've run dual amp setups. Virtual or real. The sonic wall you create is AMAZING. ![]() Here's an example of some analog delay emulation: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/870088/sounds/dubdelay.mp3 -- amp model on that one is, IIRC, a Engl. And it takes pedals like a champ. That's right: I run pedals in to the front of it. There are fuzz pedals and some delay stuff that I just like better out of the pedals. It plays super nice with my picky Scrambler+: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/870088/sound...mblerplus3.mp3 Live I'm running it direct. Sounds awesome: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/870088/ddtri...20Film_001.MP3 If there's something you want to hear it do just let me know. I'm not a terribly versatile player, but I'll give a try even if it's out of my comfort zone.

Thank you very much for all your clips on the Axe-FX, and your opinions. As very awesome as the Axe-Fx rig looks, I went with the Eleven Rack. Here are some of my reasons:
I will keep you guys posted upon my impressions once I get it. |

It's all about getting what works best for you. No one piece of kit will be the best option for everybody, and most people won't be able to tell much of a difference on a finished recording or in a live setting, anyway, so it sounds like you made a pretty solid purchase.
The names being different doesn't mean that they are modeled any less closely on a certain piece of gear. Neither piece of gear calls the models by the name of the pedal they're modeling, though, so maybe I misread you there. One advantage of the Eleven, though, is that it models pedals other than overdrives and distortions. The Axe-FX has pristine studio-grade effects, but you can't bring up, say, a Phase 90 or a Boss CE-1.
