toubles with droning.

I've written a few songs that have a drone in the back ground. my biggest problem is the "click" I get between the beginning and the end of the loop. This happens with my dl-4 and with my digidelay.

I don't think it's how I'm playing, but it could be.

any suggestions?

thanx

Are you using a Ebow for the drone by any chance? If not, you should be able to get it seamless. If not, use a volume to quickly fade the loop in and out before clicking it off. Hard as hell to do though.....

My only suggestion is to make sure that your pick attack at the end of the phrase is the same as the beginning when your finish the loop. If your starting out a loop with a hard pick attack and finish it with a softer one, you'll hear an unnatural separation where the loop connects. This is just as important as timing for an even sounding layer. A wet/short (say 60%,0.5 sec) reverb will help to make it seamless.

well, this is what I do.

just using my rv2 for reverb,

I play and e octave chord on the 7th fret then turn up the volume on my guitar, as it gets to the peak I begin the loop. (so there are no attack notes in the loop) just a few counts latter I hit play. the volume seems to be the same throughout the drone, but where I hit play it seems to have a little blip, that's not quite in time and really annoying.

anymore suggestions?

Instead of using the DL4's looper, I would just use a delay setting with infinite repeats. Make sure the delays keep going after you turn the pedal off. Hit the note or chord, fade in, fade out, turn the pedal off.

I was gona sudgest (if it is the pick atack seperation) a touch of reverb will rectify it! if not go with 5ways volume idea!

Do what you would normally do, but overdub the loop many times over at different points. After a few times, there is no distinction. I know because I have the same "problem" a lot, and it's what I do with my digidelay to cure it.

I like this idea, I've done it before, don't know why I didn't think of it, but thank you.

well I tried the forever delay thing on the dl4, and I hate it.

I can do it well with the digidelay, because of the hold, but it's a little silly to be twisting the knob like that. But if that's what I have to do than I'll do it.

It all has to do with timing. You have a blip because you're starting the loop in the middle of a sustained note. What i would do is start the loop, do the fade-in, then put the DL-4 in overdub to let the note trail off allowing the sustained note to blend over the beginning of the loop. That will give you a seamless drone.

one more thing to add, if you're recording a drone with lots of reverb and delay- play through it once before actually recording it to the loop. Otherwise, when the drone begins, you won't be hearing the previous delays or reverberations that came before it and it'll sound dry for a moment.

good luck.

i "drone" alot in my songs to get sort of an ambience behind it all.. the 2 ways i use...

1) big muff-crank and the knobs, save the volume-with your right hand, fret the note you wish- press down very hard-wiggle your finger across the fretboard like a vibrato only very, very exagerated and fast

easy to loop

you dont need a big muff, just any very gainy fuzz pedal with lots of overtones.

2)turn on as many delay and reverb units as you own-tremelo pick as fast as you can

it will have a slight "swell" effect but once it reaches its peak, you should have no problem looping it.
